COURSE NOTES
What I find interesting about the emerging field of personal informatics (which is arguably an extension of, or part of personal digital archiving) is that it focuses on streams of data that emerge out of the individual. Because the data is so personally-relevant, I argue that it is significantly different from data that exists elsewhere and must be organized, searched for, and curated. Some of the possible topics and activities that I would cover: Sources of personal informatics data Concepts, models, and theories around personal data and personal informatics Prototyping and evaluating apps, user interfaces and visualizations around personal data Sharing and privacy issues for personal data Self-reflection and self-awareness The course would draw upon theories, methods and techniques from HCI, Ubicomp, Infovis and would be a mix between readings and hands-on projects and presentations. I like this format because it can be calibrated based on the technical expertise of the students. Projects can range from software implementations to position papers and everything in between.
PREREQUISITES
Graduate standing.
