1998-1999 Programs and Events

Stephanie Malmros attended the Fall New Student Orientation in order to introduce new students to the UT-SAA Student Chapter, distribute membership forms, and answer questions. The UT-SAA Student Chapter kicked off the fall semester with a potluck dinner at Dr. Gracy’s home on September 18, 1998. At the potluck, Stephanie Malmros and Jennifer Ulrich discussed their experiences at the 1998 SAA Annual Meeting in Orlando. Also, Helen Baer, Tad Hershorn, Stephanie Malmros, Michele Ostrow and Jennifer Ulrich talked about their internships at the Joint Archives of Holland, the Historic New Orleans Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, and the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center respectively During the fall semester the UT-SAA Student Chapter hosted two speakers and one field trip:

· On October 23, Dr. Martha Norkunas, Oral and Public Historian at the Center for American History gave a three hour oral history workshop. Dr. Norkunas addressed the practical issue of equipment, as well as interviewing elements and techniques. Students had the opportunity to conduct a practice oral interview.

· On November 20, Texas State Archivist Chris LaPlant discussed the organization and operation of the State Archives and the Regional Historical Records Depository program, and took student chapter members on a tour of the Texas State Library and Archives.

· On November 25, Robert Schaadt, Archivist of the Sam Houson Center, talked to the student chapter about the supposed diary of the Pirate Jean Lafitte, which was brought to light by forger John Laflin, and which carried the life of Jean Lafitte several years beyond 1825, the year of his death according to the Handbook of Texas.

Helen Baer, Nancy Enneking and Jennifer Ulrich graduated in December of 1998, leaving the positions of Web Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer vacant. Astrid Stimac and Dale Sauter were appointed Co-Web Chairs; Nicole Hartmann Hadad was appointed Secretary; and Mimi Dionne was appointed Treasurer. Stephanie Malmros attended the Spring New Student Orientation in order to introduce new students to the UT-SAA Student Chapter, distribute membership forms, and answer questions. Once again the semester was kicked off with at potluck dinner at Dr. Gracy’s home on January 29, 1999. At the potluck, Sarah Ziebell Mann and Matthew Darby talked about their experiences at the AMIA annual meeting in December. During the spring semester the UT-SAA Student Chapter hosted four speakers and one tour:

· On January 27, Kinga Perzynska, Director of the Catholic Archives of Texas, gave the student chapter a tour of the Catholic Archives of Texas.

· On February 23, Sam Burns, Records Manager at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, discussed the legal issues of records management and his experiences working with local governments to preserve resources for studying the community.

· On March 26, Dr. Martha Norkunas, Oral and Public Historian at the Center for American History, presented a follow up oral history workshop. The focus of the workshop was on transcribing oral histories and the uses of oral histories.

· On April 23, Cathy Henderson, Research Librarian at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, discussed things every archivist and librarian should know about copyrights. Ms. Henderson pointed out the stringent and at times controversial measures undertaken at the HRHRC to prevent abuses of copyright.

· On April 23, Rachel Howarth, Librarian at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (HRHRC), took student chapter members on a tour of the HRHRC exhibit, “Modernists in New Mexico.” Ms. Howarth co-curator of the exhibit, provided students with a curator’s perspective on the process of and issues relating to assembling an exhibit.

In April the student chapter elected officers for the 1999-2000 year. The newly elected officers are:
