January 2003: The ALA Council Committee on Diversity establishes the Spectrum Advisory Committee. Former ALA President, Dr. Betty Turock, serves as Chair.

9 March 2003: The Association of College & Research Libraries (ARL) announces that it will fund five Scholars interested in careers in academic librarianship. The ACRL Board also approved the establishment of an ACRL Spectrum Scholar Mentor Task Force.

17 March 2003: Tracie Hall assumes responsibilities as Director of the ALA Office for Diversity.

May 2003: Dr. Carla Hayden, Chair of the Spectrum Steering Committee, is elected President-elect of ALA.

May 2003: Hector Escobar (1999 Spectrum Scholar) is elected to serve as ALA Councilor-at-Large.

9 June 2003: Sandra Rios Balderrama, first Director of ALA’s Office for Diversity, is named 2003 Trejo Librarian of the Year.

June 2003: The planned Diversity Leadership Institute preceding ALA Annual/Toronto is cancelled.

June 2003: A Spectrum Scholar Forum is held at 2003 ALA Annual/Toronto.

Fall 2003: Rita Pino Vargas (1998 Spectrum Scholar) is appointed to the ALSC Newbery Committee.

Fall 2003: Maria Casado (1999 Spectrum Scholar) is selected for LAMA’s Leaders of the Pack.
