Honoring Generations is now accepting applications for the spring 2006 semester.

The deadline for applications is September 1, 2005.

The application process for Honoring Generations, The School of Information, and the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin is as follows:

Signing up for and taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

  • For Online registration, go to http://www.ets.org/register.html. From that page, click on the link, "GRE® - Graduate Record Examinations®." It will take you step by step through the registration process. You must take the General Test.
  • For phone or mail registration, go to www.gre.com. On the menu bar to the left, click "Test Registration," then click on "General Test." The General Test Registration page will give you different options on how to register. You can register by phone or by mail.
  • The GRE website, www.gre.com also provides one practice exam that you can download. At any screen, click on the "download" tab at the top of the page. The Download Library will show you what is available for download. It also notes that you must have Adobe Acrobat (which is free to download) to view test preparation materials. Click on the Test Preparation Materials link to view what is available.
  • How to fill out the forms for UT and the iSchool. You've done this so I
    know that you're an expert!

Admission to the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin

For complete information about applying to the Graduate School, refer to the UT Austin Graduate Catalog. The catalog is the document of authority for all students.

Applicants must submit the following materials to the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC):

  • An application to the Graduate School. Applicants may request a Graduate Admissions Bulletin by phone (512-475-7390), or apply electronically using the GIAC online application.     • To apply online, click on the link at the top of the page, "Complete the online Texas Common Application."
    • Please note that the graduate program you are applying for is designated, "Information studies 661300."

     

  • The GIAC application fee. Graduate and International Admissions Center

    Write your Application ID number (six digit), UT EID, or SSN (nine digit) on your check or money order.

    The application processing fee for U.S. applicants for all programs other than those involving the Graduate School of Business is $50.

  • One official copy of your transcripts. NOTE - an additional copy should be sent to the School of Information to be considered for scholarship and fellowship awards.


  • Your official GRE Report. During registration for the GRE, you will be asked where you want your score report sent. Make sure it is sent to The University of Texas at Austin.

 

Admission to the School of Information

To gain admittance to the School of Information, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

  • The completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent education at a foreign institution.


  • A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (on a scale on which the grade of "A" is equal to 4.0) in all junior- and senior-level upper-division and graduate-level coursework attempted or completed.


  • A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE). In the admission-decision process, an applicant's GRE scores are judged in conjunction with his or her GPA. The median GRE (combined Verbal and Quantitative Aptitudes) of School of Information master's-level students in recent years has typically been slightly above 1100.

As mentioned above, transcripts and grade reports must be sent to the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) AND directly to the School of Information.

Applicants must submit only the following materials directly to the Chair, Admissions Committee of the School of Information:

  • An Application for Admission to the Program Leading to the Degree of Master of Science in Information Studies - PDF | Word


  • References and letter of recommendation from three people who can attest to the applicant's aptitude for graduate work and professional promise. These letters must clearly indicate why the authors of the letters believe the student has the intellectual ability to succeed in graduate school.
    • The form for these letter, Request for Reference and Statement of Purpose forms, are in the Graduate Admission Bulletin and at the GIAC Web site http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/giadownload. NOTE that the forms are in PDF format. A letter of recommendation must be attached to the completed reference form.

Conditional Admissions
Once the application process is completed, students who fail to meet one of the requirements for regular admission may be granted conditional admission under strictly controlled criteria and conditions.
