The graduate advisor is responsible for:

Current Students

  • Setting advising dates
  • Instruction regarding advising
  • Miscellaneous assistance including coursework and referrals to other university resources
  • Submitting student petitions to the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) and the Office of Graduate Studies

Procedures

  • Add/Drop a class
  • Petition to transfer credits (rules and procedures)
  • Petition for extension of matriculation beyond 6-year limit
  • Policies and rules governing matriculation
  • How and when to register
  • Specialization/Endorsement requirements
  • Professional Meetings (TLA, Archives, etc.)
  • Change Advisor
  • All documentation

Prospective Students

  • Assigning a faculty advisor
  • Providing visitors with an informational tour
  • Setting up class visitation/attendance
  • Matching prospective students with faculty and current students who share their interests
  • Chairing the Admissions Committee

Alumni

  • Recommending alumni for University Outstanding Service Awards, etc.
