Happy Hour!
The SAA-UT will be holding a Happy Hour next week! It's a great opportunity for SAA members or anyone with an interest in archives, records management, and related fields to meet with each other. The board also has a lot of great plans for this year, and we'd like to have everyone's input! So come to drink, eat, talk, and be merry!

When: Tues., Feb. 12 at 5.30pm
Where: Scholz Biergarten at 16th & San Jacinto

Next Meeting - Mar. 5th at 5pm in SZB 556
Please, join us! We will discuss several topics:

Also, Olga G. Leontieva will be speaking to us about her experience with archives in Russia. Click here for her bio.

Mexico Trip Information from VP Caitlin Bumford:

Greetings from the Frigid North, Fellow Archivists!

For those of you who weren't able to make it to SAA's first chapter meeting of the semester, we are planning on taking a weekend road trip to archives on the Texas-Mexico border this coming May. At Wednesday's meeting, we briefly introduced our rough idea of the trip, and I passed around handouts with what basic information we currently have. The handout I made up containing the very rough details we have at this point in time is available in Microsoft Word (.doc) format. Please take some time to consider this fun way to expand your professional horizons in the world of archival enterprise. After looking over the handout, please be sure to fill out this brief survey on surveymonkey.com about your level of interest and which possible weekend you can/would prefer to travel.

Thanks,
Caitlin

"Ask Me About Archives!" Elevator Speech Contest:
To prepare for Archives Week 2008, we're asking all archivists to create their very own "elevator speech" about what archives are and what archivists do. First and second place winners will receive "Archivists" t-shirts. So get those speeches into VP Caitlin Bumford (caitlin bum [at] g mail [dot] com) by October 17 at 5pm!

"Ask Me About Archives!" Elevator Speech Contest Winners:
To prepare for Archives Week 2008, we asked all archivists to create their very own "elevator speech" about what archives are and what archivists do. The results are in!

First Place goes to Lauren Goodley:

Archivists keep records. Records are documents, artifacts, audio and visual materials, and electronic files that are created in the course of human activity. By preserving and providing access to these records, archivists give a voice to the past, for current and future generations.
Second Place goes to Sheri Miklaski:
Archives are dynamic documents in a static state waiting for a user to reactivate them. They are the evidence of lives lived and business transacted and can exist in many forms. Archives illuminate our past and our future; because of this they are invaluable. Archivists are the guardians of these treasures that have been deemed worthy of value for future generations. Both the archive and the archivist exist to serve you.
