History of the Edible Book Festival

The first International Edible Book Festival took place in 2000, inspired by art librarian and curator Judith Hoffberg (1934-2009). Since then it has been usually held on April Fool's Day--fitting for a tongue-in-cheek celebration of book and food cultures--in a number of countries.

It also happens to be the birthday of French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), author of Physiologie du gout, a witty meditation on food. See this article from culinary website for more information.

Austin's EBF History

Students in the archives, conservation, and preservation programs at the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin (a mouthful!) have typically coordinated Austin's Edible Book Festival since 2003
