Position Title: Library Director
Employer: City of Cedar Park
Degree/Year: MSIS, 2007
"…people’s information needs are always changing so there are always new ways to learn and new ways to make a difference.”
Julia received her bachelor’s degree from UT Austin in English and Women’s Studies, and had a career in Human Resources before returning to UT to obtain her MSIS. Her most memorable iSchool courses were Dr. Westbrook’s Reference & Collection Management and Dr. Roy’s Library Instruction & Public Libraries. She also gained rewarding experience as an intern at the Ask-A-Librarian service at UT, but credits her inspiration to work in public libraries to her part-time position at the Cedar Park Public Library.
Now, Julia works as the Operations Manager of the Cedar Park Public Library. She manages the public and technical services divisions, oversees technology development and training, assists the Library Director in administrative functions, and is the administrator for the Library’s online system. Julia is very passionate about helping people and connecting them to new books, media, and technology. “Public service is hugely rewarding for me,” she says, “because people’s information needs are always changing so there are always new things to learn and new ways to make a difference.” As her “true passion,” Julia finds that working in public libraries provides the unique opportunity to serve a “wide cross-section of people of all ages.”
For current students and recent graduates, she advises to gain hands-on experience and apply theories learned in the classroom to library or information environments. Through that experience, students will also make important contacts and cultivate a professional network. She also advises students to have fun. During her time at the iSchool, Julia joined the iSchool kickball team, Dublin Hardcore, and several of her former teammates also work at the Cedar Park Library.
