Texas iSchool awarded $635K grant to improve credit for research software

School of Information Assistant Professor James Howison is collaborating on a new project that aims to transform the way we measure the scholarly impact of software.

Funded by a three-year, $635,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. Howison is working with the open-source website Impactstory to create a database of software projects that are mentioned in research papers.

Advisory Council welcomes new chair, vice chair

Dr. Dale Ricklefs has concluded her three-year term as chair of the School of Information Advisory Council. She is succeeded by Christian Schley, who served the past three years as vice chair. 

In addition, Advisory Council member Sue Trombley has been appointed vice chair.

School renames conservation lab to honor donor

The School of Information has received a $2.3 million gift from the estate of Judge William Wayne and Margaret Kilgarlin. The funds will support the iSchool’s areas of conservation and preservation and provide $1.38 million for student support.

Alumna rejoins school as career development director

One of the School of Information’s own graduates has returned as the director of career development.

 

Beth Hallmark brings more than 20 years of experience as a hiring manager and communications leader to the iSchool. She joined the team in September from Austin-based Hanger Inc., where she was director of public relations and communications.

 

Student named an International Voices blogger

School of Information student Neha Javalagi has been selected as one of six UT Austin students to be an International Voices blogger.

Sponsored by International Student and Scholar Services in UT’s International Office, the blog gives students a chance to share their experiences with their peers as well as friends and family back home.

Grad student participates in digital news preservation

Randolph Bias and Sheng-Cheng Huang Receive John Wiley Best Paper Award at ASIS&T

The world’s leading organization for information research, ASIS&T, has awarded the 2016 John Wiley & Sons Best JASIST Paper Award to iSchool professor Dr. Randolph Bias and his doctoral graduate, Dr. Sheng-Cheng "Hans" Huang, for their work on neuroimaging and information systems.  The honor will be presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Seven new directors have taken the reins of the iSchool’s official student council, the Student Association of the School of Information (SASI).

From social events to museum visits and information sessions, SASI’s mission is to promote a sense of community within the iSchool and foster professionalism and leadership within the student body. The group also serves as a link between students and the administration of the school and the university.

Longtime Professor Barbara Immroth retires

Barbara Immroth, a professor renowned for her research of children’s libraries and literature, has retired. 

A faculty member of the School of Information since 1980, Immroth won numerous state and national awards for her service to the library field. She has also shaped the careers of librarians throughout Texas and the United States.
