iSchool student groups putting community first

Fifty children gathered around computers in an East Austin classroom last spring. They knew how to operate the machines, of course. The children could type, run software and explore the Internet. But now they were handed screwdrivers.

One by one, fifth-grade students at the University of Texas Elementary School took turns removing the tiny screws that held the computers together. When they popped off the protective case, the hard drive and other components were revealed.

Several kids giggled. “I can see inside!” one girl declared.

“What is it?” another asked.

Randolph Bias and Sheng-Cheng Huang Receive John Wiley Best Paper Award at ASIS&T

The world’s leading organization for information research, ASIS&T, has awarded the 2016 John Wiley & Sons Best JASIST Paper Award to iSchool professor Dr. Randolph Bias and his doctoral graduate, Dr. Sheng-Cheng "Hans" Huang, for their work on neuroimaging and information systems.  The honor will be presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology in Copenhagen, Denmark.

UT iSchool hosts ATX Women in Tech panel Feb. 27

Five women, all University of Texas School of Information graduates, working in various information-related fields will discuss what technology skills have helped further their careers at the second annual ATX Women in Tech Panel Friday, February 27. The panel begins at 3:30 p.m. in Room 1.208 of UT School of Information, 1616 Guadalupe St., Austin. A reception will follow at 4:30 p.m. in the iSchool's Tocker Foundation Student Lounge.
