Matthew De Waelsche was Recoginized at the Juneteenth Freedom Dinner

Matthew De Waelsche, alumni of iSchool, archivist of the San Antonio Public Library's Texana/Genealogy Room, was recognized June 17 at the Juneteenth Freedom Dinner at St. Philip's College for his work with Texana's African-American funeral program collection. There are about 4,400 programs in the collection; 3,500 have been scanned and are available online through the University of North Texas online Portal to Texas History, with nearly 900 soon to be added through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Local Publication Features Rachel Nellis (MSIS '16)

Rachel Nellis, an iSchool Masters student, is participating in the 2015 Frank and Peggy Steele Internship program at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. this summer. Her internship experience was captured by her hometown publication, the Kane County Chronicle. 

The Batavian, a graduate student in archival studies at the University of Texas, is one of 19 members of the 2015 Frank and Peggy Steele Internship program, a 10-week study that provides a playground for Nellis’ photographic memory.

Makes sense. She certainly handles her share of images each day.

iSchool Students Complete Library of Congress “Horns on the Hill” Metadata Internship

Instead of soaking up the sun in a traditional Spring Break getaway setting, UT iSchool students Laura Fry and Megan Martinsen participated in the ‘Horns on the Hill program by completing internships at the Law Library of Congress.

iSchool conservators care for Bacone's Ataloa Lodge collections

ISchool faculty Rebecca Elder and Karen Pavelka were invited to Bacone College in Muskogee, OK for a conservator's weekend to help care for neglected collections at Bacone's Ataloa Lodge museum. They worked along other invited collections care professionals and library staff, including the Senior VP for Advancement of the college, who showed up in a tee shirt and shorts, ready to help out wherever he was needed.

Digital Archive Holds Untold History of African American Mental Health

Resplendent in his trademark sport coat and bow tie, Louis Armstrong plays a trumpet for a large gathering of patients underneath a grove of trees outside of Central State Hospital, the world's first African American psychiatric hospital in Petersburg, Virginia. This is one of the many priceless images stored away in the hospital's filing cabinets that were on the brink of destruction. Due to changes in Virginia's records retention laws, any hospital document over 10 years old had to be destroyed-one hundred years of historic materials lost forever.

Archives Week 2013

UT's student chapter of the Society of American Archivists is excited to present our 14th annual Archives Week, a celebration of historical archives and their role in society. Archives Week is part of Archives Month, which has been recognized each October since its beginning in Michigan in 1969. This year's theme is "Technology in the Archives" and includes events that demonstrate how emerging technologies affect and are used in archives, as well as the current archival research being done at UT's School of Information.
