Convocation 2016

School of Information Dean Andrew Dillon recognized nearly 100 graduates during the iSchool convocation on May 21.

Acting Librarian of Congress David Mao delivered the convocation address. Mao, who was appointed in October 2015, described his efforts to reorganize the Library of Congress by strengthening the institution’s management of information technology, among other major projects.

“We know that in this time of change everything is moving forward very, very quickly,” said Mao, who is also a member of the UT iSchool’s Advisory Council. “It’s certainly not easy to take responsibility and make very difficult decisions that have enormous political and policy implications, but I’ve learned from all those things.”

Mao urged the iSchool’s graduates to “stick their necks out” to support good ideas they believe will lead to success.

“Most importantly, say yes to the opportunities that come before you,” he said. “Because I think all of you are future leaders in the information profession.”

The graduation ceremony honored more than 50 iSchool students who received Master of Science degrees in Information Studies in May 2016. About 40 graduates were also recognized for MSIS degrees they received in August or December 2015.

In addition, the iSchool awarded three graduates the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Information Studies.
