In this seminar, we will learn ethnographic techniques and come to appreciate the value and challenges of this method by conducting a group ethnography of one or more information professions. Together we will learn and practice techniques of observation and interviewing prior to entering the field. Collectively and individually, we will gather, prepare, and analyze data. We will learn how to write memos and craft papers from ethnographic data, gaining guidance and drawing inspiration from classic examples in information studies and beyond.
