Title: Understanding Change in the Life of a Complex Digital Object: A Preservation Perspective
Abstract: My proposed dissertation examines the preservation of complex, dynamic objects through an in-depth case study of a digital game that changes over time: League of Legends. I first present a theoretical framework for approaching digital games such as League of Legends as complex systems that change over time. Drawing on different scholars within the field of game studies, I integrate different views of games and play into a coherent sense of a complex system that can be described as artifact, experience, and activity. I also discuss the myriad conversations around the digital preservation concept of significant properties. Finally, I describe four focused research questions and outline the methods chosen to best answer those research questions in the context of this dissertation project. I draw heavily on humanistic interpretive and critical methods in order to "read" representations of the changing artifact.
