MSIMS Launches

UT iSchool and the Center for Identity Launch New Master's Degree

They come from across the country and in some form work in the identity management and security industry. But today, they're students at the University of Texas at Austin.

"I've been in the identity space sort of accidentally for about the last 15 years," Ken Meiser said. Meiser is the vice president of identity solutions at ID Analytics in San Diego, California."We build software specifically to help banks and Telco's and other lenders evaluate whether or not an applicant is who they say they are," he said.

The program is a result of collaboration between the School of Information and the Center for Identity at UT. It's designed to educate industry leaders on business practices, policy, communications and technology solutions to protect identifying information. "As this information grows in value and in numbers so do the opportunities for either mistakes or criminal activity," Suzanne Barber, director of the Center for Identity, said.

iSchool faculty members Ken Fleischmann, Bo Xie, and Byron Wallace received a research award from the Seton-CHASP Research Partnership

Seton Healthcare Family and The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Health and Social Policy (CHASP) at the LBJ School of Public Affairs have announced the funding of seven new health care research studies aimed at resolving critical health and health care services delivery problems in Central Texas. Seton has granted approximately $300,000 for studies involving physicians, faculty members and other researchers in this first round of a new partnership with the LBJ School and CHASP.

iSchool faculty Patricia K. Galloway receives the 2015 Library Journal/ALISE Excellence in Teaching Award

Rarely can one find a professor with such a wide and profound knowledge of the fields and disciplines that relate to applying digital technology to development of cultural archives. Professor Patricia K. Galloway, of the iSchool at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, takes these achievements several levels higher with her record of original and broad scholarship; her many contributions to research and new knowledge in her practice and belief system of cultural archives and historiography; and the roster of current and former students she has led, instructed, and greatly inspired. Together, these achievements moved the judges to name her the winner of the 2015 Library Journal/ALISE Excellence in Teaching Award, sponsored by Rowman & Littlefield.

James Howison wins AIS Best Information System Publications Award

At ICIS conference in Fort Worth, iSchool Faculty James Howison's paper "Beyond the organizational ‘container’: Conceptualizing 21st century sociotechnical work" won the "AIS Best Information Systems Publications Award". Since 2006, the Senior Scholars have annually recognized up to five papers with a Best Information Systems (IS) Publications Award. This award was established to recognize the breadth of high quality work that is being published in the information systems discipline, and was designed to bring outstanding papers across a range of journals to the attention of the IS community, and to give due credit to the journals in which they are published.

Jane Gruning, a PhD student in the iSchool, recently had her paper, "Things We Own Together: Sharing Possessions at Home,” accepted at the annual ACM SIG CHI conference, the most prestigious conference for research in human-computer interaction.

Doctoral Candidate Sarah Buchanan Won First Place At The 2016 ALISE Conference

iSchool doctoral candidate, Sarah Buchanan, won first place at the 2016 ALISE Conference in the Jean Tague-Sutcliffe Doctoral Student Research Poster Competition. This competition was established in 1997 in memory of Jean Tague-Sutcliffe, professor and former dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (now the Faculty of Information and Media Studies) at the University of Western Ontario, and is sponsored by ALISE.
