- Our representative user is a UT junior, enrolled in an elective English
Literature course - E 376L – Self Revelation in Women’s Writing. Because
there are lots of textbooks for the class, the student wants to save
some money by checking out as many as she can from the UT libraries.
- She wants to know first if the UT libraries even have any of the required
books, and second, if she’ll be able to keep them for the entire semester.
She’s not checked out many items from the library before, and is unsure
of the rules and regulations. Being an undergraduate, she is most familiar
with UGL, although she has been to PCL a few times – so she may need
a map to navigate to the specific libraries housing the books, if they
are found among the UT libraries collection.
- She searches the catalog for the items on her list, but using incorrect
search terminology she does not find what she is looking for, however
keywords are suggested at the top of the page. When she uses the suggested
key words, she finds the books. She is able to make a display list of
the books. Each entry lists where the books are housed and provides
a direct link to a map. She prints out her list and goes to find the
books.

- A student wants to write a research paper on the trend of teenage
suicides in the US in the last 30 years.
- First, he wants to find statistics of teenage suicides.
- So he wants to check police and EMS reports. So he tries “Government
Records” or use the Search box at the top to perform the search.
- Then he wants to find theories of teenage psychology and what specialists
have to say:
- So he utilizes Databases and the Catalog options.
- He finds something he likes, but the book is checked out, he then
clicks on the book’s Recall button, which would prompt him to sign in
using his UT EID.
- Next, he wants to find out if there’s a map showing where the highest
instances of teenage suicide occurs, so he goes to the top right corner’s
“Advanced Search” option, which takes him to the Advanced Search page,
where he can 1) start a new search or 2) limit his previous search results
by setting “Format” option as “Map”

- Researcher
comes to page and chooses whether she is looking for articles, journals,
or indexes.
- Researcher chooses articles and browses by topic.
- She finds the topic and the system returns a list of articles in
that topic.
- The list is annotated with an icon/label combination that designates
whether the article is available full text online, is available in a
library at UT, or if it may be requested from an outside library.
- Some list entries are annotated with all three designations.
- The researcher flags a dozen interesting articles and clicks a button.
- She goes to a page with the abstracts for each article.
- After skimming the abstracts, she removes four from her list and
ranks the other eight.
- The system returns the abstracts in rank order.
- She clicks a button to sort the abstracts by icon/label combination.
- Two of the articles are not available online, but are at PCL.
- She prints out the abstracts for these two articles and logs out
of the system.
