As Professor, shared responsibility for developing and teaching courses in library and information science and for conducting research in this field. Courses taught included: database-management principles and applications, generalized programming and data structures, history of information retrieval, information technologies and the information professions, introduction to library and information studies, library automation, microcomputer uses in managing information, operations research in libraries, research methods (emphasizing statistics and survey methods), and systems analysis and evaluation. Also taught various seminars on special topics and supervised doctoral dissertations and numerous individual-study courses.
Served as Acting Dean and Dean for eight years, 1982-90. As Dean, led a faculty of 12 full-time members and an average of 6 part-time members, who were (and are) engaged in research and in teaching a student body numbering approximately 400 and including both master's-degree and doctoral students.
Originated and taught two graduate-level courses in information storage and retrieval (the only courses in this field taught at the University of Wisconsin--Madison during 1966-72). Served as co-founder, and member of the Executive Board of the Clearinghouse on Educational Facilities, a part of the national Educational Resources Information Clearinghouse (ERIC) system; designed and guided the development of computer-based support of its operations.
Exercised responsibility for analyzing on-going library operations, and for designing and developing computer-based systems for support to these operations. Supervised a staff that assisted me in these functions.
Conducted research in information storage and retrieval, assisted in the analysis and design of information-handling systems for military and medical applications, and participated in a study of national document-handling systems for science and technology.
Conducted research in information storage and retrieval, studied means of optimal handling of data via computers, and assisted in statistical analyses and computer-based data-handling for medical research.
Used mathematical and statistical techniques in problems of handling large amounts of heterogenous data, especially natural-language data, and developed techniques for processing such data by computer-based systems.

Served as Commanding Officer, 1977-79, of U.S. Naval Reserve unit NR DIRNSA FMDE 610, Austin, Texas, directing the activities of 13 Naval Reserve units in a project that earned a commendation from the Secretary of the Navy.
Taught a workshop on research methods and information sources, emphasizing the use of microcomputers and online databases, for staff members of credit unions.
Co-directed a study of the use of business, legal, managerial, and technical information throughout the Atlantic Richfield Company and its principal subsidiaries, and made recommendations for enlarging and re-organizing the corporation's information-handling activities.
Participated in the systems analysis of patron and staff needs in a new automation-support system for Austin Public Library and in the subsequent design effort, which led to approval by the Austin City Council and to the installation of a $1,000,000+ new automation system during 1992-93.
Co-directed a study that (1) analyzed the information needs of field representatives of the Comptroller and (2) designed a new system to meet those needs.
Advised on problems of handling natural-language information via computers.
Advised on the establishment of: (1) a database-management system to provide access to articles published in the El Norte and El Sol newspapers of Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, and to related articles in other news media; (2) a database of economic statistics; and (3) an online system, INFOSEL-INFODEX, which provides commercial access internationally to these databases (and is now the largest provider of online information in Latin America).
Made recommendations on the automation of the records-management system and the technical library of the Hughes Tool Division of Hughes Tool Company.
Co-developed and co-taught a one-week workshop on the functions and management of special libraries and information centers, for managers to whom IBM library directors report (1984). Co-developed and co-taught one-week workshops on current techniques in information science and management for IBM library directors and staff members (1987, 1988, and 1989).
On behalf of ICA's Benjamin Franklin Libraries in Mexico, conducted (in Spanish) a one-week workshop on the then new Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) for librarians in the Guadalajara area.
Assisted in the design of a database and advised on the computer processing of data for the definition of goals for Madison and for projections of possible future effects of alternative goals.
Reviewed, and made recommendations on, the organization and the acquisitions policies of the Library at McDonald Observatory.
Assisted in the organization of the symposium and in the editing of its proceedings for publication.

Co-taught a workshop on the use of microcomputers and statistical data-processing for staff members of appraisal districts in Texas.
Co-directed a study that (1) analyzed the status and needs of the Division's information system and (2) designed a new information-handling system to meet those needs.
Studied the National Library School of Peru, then a part of the Biblioteca Nacional del Perú, and made recommendations for organizational and curricular changes. My report, "Perú: Desarrollo de infrastructuras de documentación, bibliotecas y archivos: Escuela Nacional de Bibliotecarios: recomendaciones para su fortalecimiento y realce", supported the move of this school to a university; it thus contributed to the efforts by Peruvian librarians that culminated in the establishment in 1980 of the Escuela Académico Profesional Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información, in the Facultad de Letras y Ciencias Humanas of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, the oldest university in South America.
Reviewed, and made recommendations on, the organization and the personnel policies of a technical library at this base.
Advised on managerial and technical aspects of systems for processing information via computers.
Designed an information storage and retrieval system for the vocational rehabilitation staff of the Veterans Administration in Wisconsin.
Assisted in the organization and teaching of workshops, for in-service librarians, on systems analysis and library automation.
