Bio: James Lastra
James Lastra is Associate Professor of English at the University of Chicago, where he Chairs the Committee on Cinema and Media Studies, and serves as the Director of the Film Studies Center. His book, Sound Technology and the American Cinema: Perception, Representation, Modernity, examines the emergence of sound recording in the context of both the Hollywood industry and American culture more broadly in order to understand how societies assimilate new representational forms.. He is currently finishing essays on contemporary sound design and on early soviet sound theory, and a book on Surrealism in the cinema.
