CONDITION AND DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Binding
This is a case binding with a full, embossed cloth cover that is a dark ultramarine blue, or was at the time of publishing, as seen from cloth on front of case and fore-edge squares. The title is stamped in gold over the spine. The cloth is abraded and unevenly stained on both sides, at the corners and is also split over the caps. Case-to-text attachment is good on the back hinge, but tenuous on the front where the hinge has abraded and the exposed textile lining has split.Textblock
The textblock has a moderate round with shallow, hammer-backed shoulders, and is sewn all-along with linen thread, on sawn-in cords. The paper used for the text is a cream-colored, machine-made wove paper of about #70, printed with black printer's ink. This paper has a slightly coarse tooth. There is a visible type impression. Throughout the text there are multiple instances of foxing, tide lines, discoloration, stains and black spots, which may be soot or (inactive) mold damage. There is a frontispiece illustration that has some tissue interleaving with image offset and foxing spots. Those engraved illustrations accompanying the main text are printed on a different, darker paper that is more brittle. One of the engravings has detached from the textblock. The single-folio endpapers are yellow, and there is an inscription of "60" in red ink over graphite, followed by "L.N. Lincoln" and another word below it, on the upper left corner on the front pastedown. Overall, the text has not split completely but is quite vulnerable to splitting and loose in places.
