"Psalm 68:21-26, The crucifixion,"

Folio 87 verso: The Crucifixion 2 Psalm 68:21-26

TRANSLATION

"They also gave me gall for my food
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Let their eyes be darkened so that they do not see;
and make their loins shake continually.
Pour out your indignation upon them,
and let your wrathful anger take hold of them.
Let their dwelling place be desolate
Let no one live in their tents.
For they persecute the ones you have struck
and talk of the grief of those you have wounded."

DESCRIPTION

This marginal illustration shows Christ bleeding on the Cross, wearing a red cloak. Above the cross appear two stars, one gray (left) and the other red (right). The Cross is raised on the top of Golgotha hill. Two soldiers with spears, one of them in a red tunic and holding a shield, raises to Christ a pole with gall. The textual basis for the illustration of Psalm 68:22 is Matt. 27:34, in which the soldiers give Jesus gall before he breathes his last.

LITURGICAL USE

Liturgically, the verse is used as a prokimeinon verse, alleluja verse, and troparion verse for Holy Friday.
