"Psalm 21:16-23, The Crucifixion"

folio 23 r: Psalm 21:16-23, The Crucifixion

TRANSLATION
"For dogs have surrounded me
the congregation of the wicked has enclosed me.
They pierced my hands and my feet
I can count all my bones.
They look and stare at me.
They divide my garments among them
and all my clothing they cast lots."

DESCRIPTION

The marginal illustration shows Christ crucified on the Cross, wearing a purple mantle. Above the Cross appear two stars: one gray and one red. Four men nail Christ's hands and feet to the cross, and blood flows from the hands. Below, three soldiers sit, dividing Christ's clothes. The Cross stands on a little hill with Adam's skull, representing Golgotha. The textual basis of this illustration is John 19:24, where people cast lots and divide Jesus' clothes.

LITURGICAL USE

Liturgically, the verse is used as a prokimeinon verse on Holy Friday.
