"Psalm 109:4-110:3, Christ giving communion"

folio 152 r: Psalm 109:4-110:3, Christ giving communion

TRANSLATION

The illustration relates to Psalm 109:4 "The Lord has sworn and will not repent; Thou art a priest forever, according to the priest of Melchisedek."

DESCRIPTION

Christ gives Communion to the Apostles, standing behind an altar beneath a sheltered altar, "ciborion." To the left stands David, behind the Apostles with raised hand pointing to the Psalm, to the right of the other group of the apostles stands Old Testament priest Melchisedeck, holding a pitcher. According to the Old Testament, Melchisedeck offered gifts to Abraham.
Red inscriptions state "David says" "Jesus Christ" and "Melchisedeck" appearing above the figures.

LITURGICAL USE

Liturgically the verse is used as a prokimeinon verse on occasions during Lent , June 14 and December 14.

The images presented here come from the electronic facsimile of the Theodore Psalter produced by Professor Charles Barber of Notre Dame University, as published by the University of Illinois Press.
