Edible Book Festival 2007

The School of Information and the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record at the University of Texas at Austin hosted the local Edible Book Festival 2007 at the Collections Deposit Library on the UT campus. The event was open to the public, and participants from UT and the local community submitted their edible book creations, competing for prizes in four categories: Best In Show, Tastiest, Wittiest, and Least Appetizing. Local sponsors provided prizes, and participants enjoyed food and drink, music, and silent movies, in addition to an exhibition of all submissions. The event attracted 25 entries and over 60 voting attendees. Texas Book Festival 2006 Children's Tent

The Texas Book Festival has been promoting literacy and honoring Texas and nationally-known authors since it was first established in 1995 by First Lady Laura Bush. Over 45,000 visitors attended the 2006 event in Austin, TX, where they enjoyed panels, demonstrations, readings, book signings, food, and music. Melissa Tedone gave a bookbinding demonstration in the Children's Tent, illustrating basic book construction, and explaining what book and paper conservators do. She and a colleague then led the children and their families in a hands-on activity, constructing mini-coloring books with supplies donated by the Harry Ransom Center for the Humanities and the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record at the University of Texas at Austin.
