My research interests

My work focuses on information retrieval. I am especially interested in statistical methods for learning from large bodies of text. Most of my research focuses on model selection problems in IR. Results from biostatistics and other appliced statistical areas give us many ways to negotiate the complexity and multiplicity of models that face us during retrieval. How many dimensions is the "best" number to retain during latent semantic indexing? Is there an information-theoretic method for handling document smoothing in language modeling? My current work analyzes the problem of data fusion--aka metasearch--using criteria for selecting generative models as a ranking method.

In addition to these topics, I am interested in the theoretical study of information, especially information-theoretic and other probabilistic frameworks for studying information in games (such as crossword puzzles).
