TREATMENT OBJECTIVE
To facilitate handling and storage of this extremely soiled manuscript.

DESCRIPTION
Approximate dimensions (W x H): 15.2 x 20 cm; 8 x 6 in.
The manuscript is a leaf of machine-made light blue colored paper with evenly applied iron gall ink in a single, cursive hand.

Media
The text was loosely written, with evenly spaced lines, in iron gall ink.  The ink appears on the front and back of the folio.  Light blue ruling lines also appear on the leaf.

Primary Support
The primary support is a piece of lightly sized, medium weight, smooth, blue colored machine-made paper. The paper was folded twice, presumably for filing.  One edge of the paper has a deckled edge, suggesting that it was torn from a larger piece of paper.

CONDITION SUMMARY
The manuscript is in fair condition, with stains, small tears and heavy accretions of dirt.

Media

Iron Gall Ink 1:
This ink comprises the body of the letter.  It has faded to a dark drown color and migrated to the back side of the paper.  Bleed-through is particularly visible under UV light.  Ink migration is also apparent in areas exposed to water damage.

Iron Gall Ink 2:
This ink comprises a brief annotation.

Ruling Lines:
Faint blue ruling lines on the front of the leaf run counter to the direction of the handwriting.

Primary Support
The primary support is a piece of heavily soiled machine made paper.  Water damage to the paper has resulted in brown stains and tidelines.  When placed under UV light, two areas along the fold of the document fluoresced yellow.  Two sides of the leaf are torn, one evenly and one unevenly.  The left edge of the manuscript has two small tears along the folds.

Housing
The manuscript is housed in a good quality folder with several other documents.

PHOTODOCUMENTATION
Digital photographs were taken before and after treatment in ambient, raking and transmitted light.

TESTING
The media did not exhibit particulate offset when tested using a cotton swab with variable pressure.
