The undersigned requests and authorizes the Kilgarlin Center at the University of Texas, Austin, TX, to undertake conservation treatment of the artifact described in the attached Condition Report according to the procedures outlined in the appended Treatment Proposal.  In the event the Owner/Custodian authorizes the Kilgarlin Center to proceed with the treatment recommended in the proposal such authorization shall be deemed to include acceptance by the depositor of the terms and conditions appearing in the original Authorization for Examination and Treatment.

TREATMENT OBJECTIVE
To facilitate handling and storage of this extremely soiled manuscript.

 

DESCRIPTION
Approximate dimensions (W x H): 8.2 x 19cm; 3 3/8 x 7 7/16 in.
The manuscript is written on a fragment of hand-made cream-colored paper in evenly applied iron gall ink in a single, cursive hand.

 

Media
Two lines of text appear only in the upper half on the front of the fragment.  It is written in iron gall ink with a moderately heavy hand. 

 

Primary Support
The primary support is a fragment of hand-made, moderately thick, wove, slightly textured, cream colored paper.  All four sides of the support are unevenly torn.

 

CONDITION SUMMARY
The manuscript is in good condition, but is heavily soiled overall.

 

Media
The iron gall ink has faded to a dark drown color and has migrated to the back side of the paper.  Ink bleed-through is particularly visible under UV light.

 

Primary Support
The paper is heavily soiled and stained with surface grime, particularly at the edges.

 

Housing
The manuscript is housed in a good quality folder with several other documents.

 

PHOTODOCUMENTATION
Digital photographs were taken before and after treatment in ambient, raking and transmitted light. 

 

TESTING
The medium did not exhibit particulate offset when tested using a cotton swab with variable pressure.

 

TREATMENT PROPOSAL

  • Dry-clean, as appropriate. (20 min.)
  • Rehouse in original folder. (5 min.)

Estimated Treatment Time: 25 min.

 

TREATMENT PERFORMED

  • Medium was tested for particulate offset. (10 min.)
  • Dry cleaned with medium and then fine grain Mars Staedler eraser crumbs.  (20 min.)
  • Brushed away crumbs with a soft brush. (5 min.)
  • Re-housed in a lignin-free folder of appropriate size. (5 min.)

Total Treatment Time: 40 min.
