Description and Condition Summary

Gamburgskii Schet was bound in a full cloth-covered case with title information stamped onto the front cover and spine.  The covering material is intact but displays surface grime.  The case is detached from the textblock, but the tipped title page and appendix remain attached to the decorative endsheets.  Overall, the textblock is in good condition.  It is comprised of a cream-colored machine-made paper printed in a black printer’s ink.  The original sewing is intact, but the threads of the pink machine-made stuck-on endbands are fraying and sooty.  The gently rounded spine was consolidated with a layer of synthetic adhesive.

Treatment Objective
To return the book to circulation ensuring that it is strong enough to withstand a book drop.

Photo documentation
Digital photographs in ambient light were taken for the before, during and after treatment photographs.

Treatment Performed

  1. Detached the tipped title page and appendix from the front and back endsheets, respectively.
  2. Due to text on the back of the front flyleaf, both flyleaves were cut along the fold and retained.  The pastedowns were mechanically removed from the front and back covers with a microspatula.
  3. Cleaned the textblock spine mechanically with a methyl cellulose poultice.
  4. Adhered a reversibility layer to the spine, using machine made Kozo and wheat starch paste.
  5. Hinged the title page, appendix and retained flyleaves onto the textblock using Kozo and wheat starch paste.
  6. Folded two new single-folio endpapers from Mohawk #80 text-weight paper and hinged them on to the textblock.
  7. Attached an overhanging cambric spine lining using PVAc and then adhered one 70# Mohawk text-weight spine lining.  Re-adhered the stuck-on endbands to the spine with PVAc.
  8. Re-cased in the textblock into the case with PVAc.
