  • January 14 Review syllabus. Discuss resources available in LIS. Discuss requirements, expectations, and goals for class. Discuss Library and Information Science as a discipline.

  • January 21 Intellectual Property and the Internet. File sharing and peer-to-peer networks. We'll set up accounts on the GSLIS server. Caleb Carr article will be handed out in class.

  • January 28 Evaluating Information on the Internet. Make sure you've read the Caleb Carr article, Information Poisoning. Login to accounts on the GSLIS server, set passwords, and create a directory for web pages. Assignment #1 explained.

  • February 4 Search Engines on the Internet. Group exercise in searching.

  • February 11 Discussion of the history of the Internet, how networks and the Internet work, and how the web came to be. An article from the New York Times will be handed out in class to be read by next week. Hands-on exercise: How to create an introductory web page.

  • February 18 Privacy on the Internet--how safe is our information in the digital age? Make sure you've read the article Dirty Laundry, Online for All to See handed out in class last week. Hands-on exercise: How to build links inside web pages.

  • February 25 Classes at UT cancelled due to weather.

  • March 4 More on privacy and encryption. Hands-on exercise: Formatting pages. Assignment #1 due.

  • March 11Spring Break

  • March 14 Government and the Internet. Hands-on exercise: Building image maps for your web pages. Groups for the final project will be assigned today and there will be a group work session. Hands-on exercise: Creating tables in HTML.

  • March 25 Fundamentals of Good Web Design. Groups need to explain their selected project today. ALSO: Assignment #2 given today. Read Online video games are the newest form of social comment for next week. Hands-on exercise: Adding metatags to your web pages.

  • April 1 Videogames and society. Make sure you've read Online video games are the newest form of social comment by Clive Thompson. We'll also have a review of the class so far.

  • April 8 Programming for the web. Hands-on exercise: How to build forms and a simple JavaScript. Also: Using graphics on the web. Assignment #2 is due today.

  • April 15 Censorship and Filtering. Hands-on exercise: cascading style sheets

    Class time given to work on group projects.

  • April 22 Introduction to XML and E-Commerce. How to build a business on the web. Review of final projects and plans for group presentations. In-class work session for final projects.

  • April 29 Presentations for the Final Project.
