I'm currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Texas, in the School of Information. Information Science is a diverse and multi-disciplinary field that stakes legit claims in everything from librarianship to information engineering to cultural studies. Maybe that's why I like it so much - if you ever get bored chances are good that someone very close to you is doing "something completely different..."
Perhaps it will come as no surprise that my background is also eclectic. From roots in a military family, I have experiences that span the public, private, and academic sectors. For fifteen years now I've worked for organizations ranging from the CIA, technology and consulting companies, and UT. Mostly I explore technology and technological processes, particularly social and organizational issues like management, marketing, and resistance. Power, security, and surveillance are all specific areas that I find quite interesting, but I'm equally (if not more) interested in the ways that we use language and discourse to construct and contest technology, process, and power. For several years now I've had the privilege of teaching on some of these subjects, and this has proven especially rewarding to me.
I live here in Austin with my wife and our son.
