Treatment Procedure:
The text block was mechanically separated from the cover. Both the text block and the cover were retained in their original condition.
The original endsheets were removed from the front and back of the text block.
The fragile and shattered parts of the endsheets were supported with heat set tissue.
The inside of the cloth cover at the head and tail was reinforced with un-dyed Kizukishi.
The original spine lining was removed from the text block. The old paste was removed mechanically and new paste was applied.
The spine was lined with Kizukishi using paste.
Sheets of Hiromi were cut to the height of the book and about 1 ½ inches wider than the volume. The Hiromi was dyed using acrylic in areas that be exposed and needed to match the color of the original endsheets.
The Hiromi sheets were hinged onto the spine using wheat starch paste. Each sheet was molded over the shoulder
The original brittle ensheets were attached to the Hiromi with a bead of Lascaux along the foredge, joint and in the center.
Two additional 1 inch strips of dyed Hiromi were attached to the spine about ½ inch using PVA. They hung over an equal amount off the shoulder. These strips were used to cover the joints after casing in.
The spine was then lined with Permalife using PVA.
The spine was additionally lined with airplane liner from head to tail hanging over each shoulder approximately ½ inch .
The pastedowns on the inside of the detached covers were lifted along the spine edge approximately 1 inch. This is done to accommodate the new joint material that has been attached to the text block along the shoulder.
The text block was re-attached to the case with PVA.
The cloth lining and then the overhanging toned Hiromi was inserted under the lifted pastedowns on the front and back board using PVA while the covers were completely open.
The lifted pastedowns were re-adhered using paste and allowed to dry
The book was closed and placed under weight.
