Current Condition: There are two major problems with the current condition of this book. First, the cover has become separated from the text block. Second, the text block itself has a sewing structure that has become weakened over time. In addition the sewing is directly exposed.
Proposed Treatment: Depending on the intended use of this book two treatments are possible. If the book receives minimal use then the spine can be relined with paste and Japanese tissue and the original covers can be reattached to the text block. In this case the book should be housed in a boxed for additional stabilization. However, if the book receives moderate use than the text block should be resewn. This in turn will most likely mean that the book's existing cover will need to be readjusted to accommodate the bulk that accompanies the process of resewing. In this instance the spine would be separated from the covers and a new spine piece (sympathetic to the original) would be constructed. Upon completion the existing spine piece can be attached to the newly constructed element allowing for the preservation of all original material. In this scenario, because of the strength associated with resewing, no housing would need to be constructed.
