NARRATIVE TREATMENT REPORT

Author: Published by the Association
Title: Fairmount Park Art Association
Imprint: Philadelphia 1922

Treatment Purpose:
The object in performing this treatment was to stabilize the text block and provide a structure that would allow the cover to function without rebacking the book. A decision was made to separate the two components and treat them individually. In order to facilitate any possible future treatment the textblock was not re-adhered to the original cover. The integrity of the cover and the text block was maintained as much as possible.

Materials:
(Colophon) Precipitated wheat starch paste mixed at a ratio of 4 to 1and cooked 20 minutes.
Gaylord Kizukishi
Aqua-blue Moriki
Acrylic paint
Pastel
Permalife
(Talas) Elvace PVAc 45675

Treatment Process:
•  The cover piece with attached endsheets was removed as one piece from the text block.
•  The first and last sheets were detached from the text block because they had been tipped to the cover structure and needed to be reinforced with Kizukishi on their spine edges.
•  The spine of the text block was lined with Kizukishi and paste to consolidate the backs of the signatures.
•  The damaged front and back sheets were lined about ¼ inch onto their spine edges with a piece of Kizukishi that overhanged off the same edge also about ¼ inch.
•  The sheets were attached by adhering the overhanging Kizukishi onto the spine with paste.
•  The spine was then lined with a piece of Permalife.
•  A thin Western paper cover with a crease on the front and back ¼ inch from the spine was fabricated off of the text block.
•  This paper cover was then attached with along the spine with PVA.
•  Because the endsheets and covering were manufactured as a single piece they were treated sperately from the text block.
•  The covering material was lifted at both joints allowing a piece of colored tissue to be adhered on the back side of the spine and run under the endsheets. This was done to reinforce the spine which was slightly damaged at the joints
•  The lifted material was re-adhered into place with paste.
•  The text block with the new cover was then housed in the original cover without any adhesives. The entire book is housed in a phase box.
