What do students in archival science learn and what should they learn? What books and articles do they study and what should they study? In the stormy debate on the adaptation of the existing programs for archival education to new developments, these are
questions teachers in archival science ask themselves more frequently than they ever did before. ICA's Section on Archival Education and Training (ICA/SAE) has produced this bibliography to help those teachers answering these questions.
An International Bibliography of Archival Science Project was started during the XIIth International Congress on Archives in Montreal in 1992. Right from the beginning, ICA/SAE acknowledged such a bibliography as an essential tool for teaching archival sc
ience, conducting research in the area, and for the development of the discipline. It considered it to be a logical follow-up to the study of manuals, textbooks and readers in the field of archival science which resulted in an international bibliography,
edited by Pirkko Rastas and published as a RAMP-study. It took it as its duty to provide teachers in archival science with a basic tool which was conspicuous by its absence. And when the original project turned out to be too laborious, it did not hesitate
to adopt the project and execute it on a smaller scale.
This bibliography, then, is not the exhaustive international bibliography of publications in archival science the initiators originally had in mind. It is not an integrated database carefully built on the important bibliographic works on archival science
already in existence. It is a concise bibliography, produced by ICA/SAE
alone. In its selectiveness it is not extremely well balanced and not fully up to date either. But its shortcomings, if taken into consideration by its users, do not prevent it from be
ing usefull.
The scope of this bibliography is limited to books and articles in the field of archival science, as far as being considered obligatory for the students and of more than merely local relevance. All titles included have been taken from the lists sent in ov
er a period of three years by the sixty archive schools who responded to
ICA/SAE's requests (which comes to a response of more than 50%). To each title in the bibliography one or more codes are added designing the school or the schools claiming to use the
book or the article in question. A list of the schools that participated makes part of the bibliography.
While collecting, completing, standardizing and classifying the titles made part of the editing process, the adequate description of the books and articles and their first selection come to the responsibility for the participating schools themselves. The
editor, however, is fully responsible for all measures eventually taken to mitigate the unavoidable quantitative and qualitative unequalness caused by this division of tasks, including further reducing the number of entries.
Why ICA/SAE considers this bibliography to be a usefull tool for archival educators? In 1992, when the project started, the adaptation of the existing curricula of archive schools was already a central issue in the archival community. During the four year
s to follow, the curriculum debate, and especially the debate on integrating new developments into the overall archival curriculum, has further intensified, as the proceedings of ICA/SAE's colloquia on archival education and training, but also publication
s like the special summer 1993 issue on the CART curriculum development project of The American Archivist clearly demonstrate. Archive schools all over the world are defining new learning objectives, each in its own way, according to its own circumstances
and within the boundaries of its resources, and in this rapid and unequal process the exchange of data on teaching aids, if not the teaching aids temselves, must be very helpfull.
What students in archival science learn is not only relevant for archival educators, but also for archivists in the field. From this bibliography they can conclude how archival educators think how the archival world will look like within a few years and g
et an impression of what future archivists will have in mind when they enter the profession. With the help of this bibliography (and the archive schools continuing education programs) they can try to minimize the effecs of an imminent archival generation
gap.
This bibliography might also answer questions of a more comparative character. It could give an indication of where we all stand in the paradigm shift. It could bring to light differences between types and levels of archival education and training and the
influence of the different educational traditions. Which books and
articles are the most widely used and to what degree archive schools have an international orientation? Any archivist who casts a glance at the titles recognizes all angles of incidence fr
om which archival theory and practice have been approached in the last decennia.
The changing character of archival science, from auxiliary science of history to an autonomous discipline in the field of the information sciences, is clearly demonstrated not only by the character of the titles, but also by the inadequacy of the classifi
cation. The titles confirm that the boundaries of the profession are blurring and expanding, as well as the boundaries between the different archival functions and the different archival materials. The inadequacy of the classification underpins the thesis
that cultures and paradigms are to be characterized by the way they are ordering their world.
It must be understandable, then, that the present classification, ordering very recent titles and archival classics at the same time, is a compromise: a compromise between the standing classification of Duchein's bibliography and the American Archivist's
classification adopted in 1993 and based on one used by David Cox in his Archives and Manuscripts Administration: A Basic Annotated Bibliography. If necessary, classes are subdivided in sections and subsections, mostly under separate headings. Within clas
ses and sections the subdivision is according to language. The ICA
working languages come first, followed by the other languages in
alphabetical order. Titles are listed chronologically, with - in most cases - the most recent title first.
To have its optimum use, this bibliography should be used in connection
with the Pirkko Rastas RAMP-study and the ICA/SAE Directory of archive schools, containing the addresses of most archival schools and courses in the world and brief descriptions of their curricula. Is practical utility will further increase if an updated version, which is already under is way, would also include the contributions of those schools and educational programs that did not contribute yet. All teachers in archival science are
kindly requested to send their comments and their lists of titles,
arranged according to the present classification, as soon as possible to
the Archiefschool, Pr. Willem Alexanderhof 28, 2595 BE, The Hague, Netherlands, fax nr. 31 70 331 54 93. ICA/SAE wil
l decide soon whether or not an updated version will be made available in an electronic format.
This book is the result of the efforts of the staffs of many schools, who
listed the titles of books and articles, and members of the steering
committee of ICA/SAE, who supported the editing. The project, however,
had never been finished without the enthousiastic, scrupulous and unselfish effors of Gabrielle E.M. Thomassen, who
actually produced this book and gave it is final shape. She deserves the
gratitude of all archival educators in the world.

us.
