Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)

CIPA went ito effect on April 20, 2001. These laws restrict the use of funding that is available through the Universal Service discount program (E-rate), LSTA funds, and Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The laws require school and public libraries receiving such funds to have internet safety policies and technology which blocks or filters certain material from being accessed through the internet.

ALA's CIPA Web Site
This site explains what CIPA is, advises librarians on what they can do to retain federal funding, provides a framework for responding to CIPA, and informs about ALA action on CIPA. ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom and Washington Office work together to maintain this site.
