The "If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything" project held a Reading Contest for students in all grades from participating schools. The Reading Contest was offered to students in three levels: Level I for students in pre-K/Kindergarten through grade 3; Level II for students in grades 4 through 7; and Level III for students in grades 8 through 12.

The "If I Can Read" Executive Board chose winners for each level at each participating school. Each winning student received a bag of books and writing supplies as prizes, and their work is now published on the "If I Can Read" website. All participating students received a certificate of merit and a gift.

Level I: Pre-Kindergarten through grade 3
Art Contest: Students drew a scene from their favorite book using crayons, pencils, magic markers, pens or any other medium they liked. Drawings were decorated with scraps of fabric, buttons, lace, etc. Students included a caption describing the scene they had drawn at the bottom of their picture (the caption may be written by an adult but is in the student's words).
Drawings were judged on: originality, use of details from the book being depicted and accurate description of the scene being drawn.

Level II: Grades 4 through 7. Wrote a letter of 250 - 500 words.
Level III: Grades 8 through 12. Wrote a letter of 500 - 750 words.

Letter Writing Contest:
Students wrote a letter addressed to an author (living or deceased) of a book they had recently read and about which they have strong feelings. Students told the author how reading their book (including the book's title) has changed the way they think about themselves and/or the world around them. They explained how the book affected them.

Letters were judged on: content and organization; originality and expression; and grammatical correctness.
