Banned Books Week takes place September 27-October 4, 2008. Banned Books Week is a celebration of the freedom to read. It raises awareness of books that have been
challenged in the previous year. A challenged book is a book that an individual or group has attempted to remove from a library because of something in the content of that book.
Banned Books Week encourages readers to examine controversial literary works. The more people who read and think about these works, the harder it will be for people to successfully challenged them.
Many libraries and bookstores will create displays of banned books to raise awareness about what books are challenged. Often members of the public do not even know that books have been challenged in
other places. The American Library Association, one of the sponsors offers Banned Books Week kits as well as posters, buttons, and bookmarks to celebrate the event.
