Renaming Favorites

I too often rename bookmarks usually because the original name is vague or misleading. Organizing the bookmarks in folders also helps provide context.

It was a huge revelation to me that I could re-organize my "Favorites" in Windows by drilling down to the "Favorites" directory then renaming shuffling shortcuts around, rather than have to use the Wizard in IE. I keep a large folder full of comics, and each of the major syndicates seem to add three or four words of boilerplate before you get the comic's name in the title, so, yes, I rename bookmarks frequently.

I never really thought of renaming bookmarks as a personal information management activity - but it certainly does make bookmarks useful. It's suprising how few sites take the time to title subpages.

I "discovered" how to organize bookmarks as a teacher. I had 21 students and only 4 computers... being able to give each kid their own folder definitely helped to make sharing the computers easier on all of us.

I use ie's "toolbar favorites" all the time, shuffling them as my interests change, but since there is only so much room on the visible tool bar, the names I give them are usually as short as possible, like "km," "ggl," "lib," and "ischl." Not very descriptive, but I fit 17 links in the same space my fiancee fits 3.

I also try to use short names for the bookmarks in my folders, but as I am usually a little less acquainted with them, I try to preserve more of the description in the name.

Organizing style of Bookmarks might tell your life style.

My husband and I use our desktop together at home.

One day I found the totally different organizations of our own Bookmarks. One is just mess and the other is a kind of "information organization"

Check your Bookmarks and think about your life style.
