WRT vendor attempts to establish proprietary languages in XML, the producers of XrML (Microsoft and Xerox) claim very broad intellectual property (IP) rights to Digital Rights Management (DRM) language concepts expressed in XrML. Their claims are particularly strong WRT expressions related to digital content management, "ContentGuard has an important and early foundation patent portfolio pertaining to the distribution of digital works and to any rights language..." (Cover, 2002, Patent Issues). In essence, ContentGuard claims IP rights in the mere concept of a DRM language expressed in XML!
