Interview with John Perry Barlow

I caught this on Slashdot today: Mother Jones Magazine has an interview with John Perry Barlow in which he "discusses the Total Information Awareness project, online activism, file sharing, and the prospect of a digital counterculture." It's short but fun. Actually, Slashdot has a number of good article today. Enjoy!

An interesting interview. Barlow's discussion of the effects the patriot act on digital information reminded me of this article by Eric Baard (new window) which appeared in the Village Voice last summer. It's old news now, but what got my attention is the fact that a rogue employee turned over the data to the feds (2nd paragraph). Barlow's anecdote about the defiant dive shop warmed my heart, but I fear the grocery chain's response is a more realistic and common story.

This seems to have a lot to do with the issues of trust and credibility we discussed today... even when you read the fine print and put your trust an organization, something like this can happen. Maybe an information breach is a mistake, maybe it's deliberate, but the damage is done. & then the co.'s general counsel will advise that they keep it secret.
