of Bing Crosby, 1949 - 1954

INTRODUCTION
The collection
of Bing Crosby radio broadcasts on instantaneous discs in the Collection
Deposit Library document Crosby's radio broadcasts from 1949 to 1954.
For nearly 30 years (1931 - 1962) Crosby broadcast a variety show at least
weekly (occasionally, five to six times a week) that ran from 15 minutes
to an hour. Crosby would perform solo as well as with guests from the
Hollywood silver screen and legends from the jazz and swing world, including
Judy Garland, the Andrew Sisters, Jimmy Stewart, Duke Ellington, Louis
Armstrong, Lucille Ball -- just to name a few.
 Crosby
prompted many innovations in the recording technology industry over his
lifetime. Constrained by the demands of a live nightly and weekly radio
broadcast that had to be repeated for different time zones, Crosby wanted
to explore recorded radio programming. In 1945, he was hosting the Kraft
Music Hour on NBC and implored the company to give him more funding and
to allow him to pre-record his show on the 16 inch instantaneous discs
that were gaining popularity and trust in the old time radio broadcast
world. NBC denied Crosby the ability to pre-record his shows, and in protest
Crosby quit the show in Fall 1945, only to be legally forced to fulfill
his contract which ended May 1946. After his contract expired, Crosby
left NBC for ABC -- a network that would allow him to broadcast pre-recorded
shows. Crosby was also involved in the invention of magnetic audio tape.
Germans developed audio tape technology during World War II, and several
German tape recorders were brought back to the United States after the
war and distributed to audio engineers so that they could imitate and
improve upon the German technology.  Crosby
was contacted by John Mullin who demonstrated how audio tape technology
worked, and on October 1, 1947 when Crosby hosted guest Gary Cooper, the
first radio broadcast recorded and edited entirely on magnetic audio tape
was aired. Crosby later went on to finance the beginnings of the Ampex
corporation, renowned for years as innovators of magnetic audio tape technology
in the United States.
Three shows
cover the time period of the instantaneous disc collection -- the Philco
Radio Time on ABC sponsored by Philco Radio and ran weekly for 30
minutes from 1946-1949. Next to come was the Chesterfield
Show from 1949 to 1952, which also aired for 30 minutes weekly. General
Electric sponsored another show documented in the collection which
also aired 30 minutes week

The
collection of Bing Crosby radio broadcasts in the Collections
Deposit Library consists of 661 ten inch discs and 11 eight inch
discs. Five brands of instantaneous disc are represented: Wilcox
Gay Recordio Discs (WGRD), Presto, Duodisc, Audiodiscs, and Recoton.
Of these brands, there are 4 types of WGRD (black coated with
a blue label; red coated with a blue label, black coated with
a green triangle label, and red coated with a blue triangle label),
2 types of Duodiscs (black coated and orange coated), and two
types of Presto discs (black coated with two holes and black coated
with 4 holes). The bulk of the collection is recorded on black
coated / blue label WGRD and black coated Duodiscs. Red coated
/ blue label WGRD are the third most prevalent disc types, and
there are only a few instances of the orange coated Duodiscs,
the Audiodiscs, and the Recoton discs.
The discs are all have an aluminum base with a plastic outer coating
– composed of either cellulose nitrate or cellulose nitrate.
Without a chemical analysis (please see future plans for further
discussion), I would speculate that the coating is cellulose acetate
as the width is extremely thin and some of the records have a
translucent orange or red coating. The black coated discs are
noticeably thicker than the red or orange coated, and the Duodiscs
are thicker than any other brand. Easily flexed, the discs are
in remarkably good condition given their thinness, age, and the
number of times and ways they have been transported and stored.
The
records are stored upright on wooden shelves in very acidic paper
sleeves.
A
single show is recorded on up to seven sides of a record -- presumably,
each song has its own record side. In the old time radio cirlce,
these discs may be known better as radio phonographs.

METHODOLOGY
Time constraints
did not permit a survey of all 669 records. Rather than perform a random
sample -- the randomness of which would in some aspects impede the utilization
of these findings in a survey of the complete collection -- the first
50 and last 50 (approximately 15%) of the records were examined. Record
title, size, type, brand, and condition were documented, as well as any
notes of damage. I photographed the various record labels and any problematic
symptoms displayed by the discs. Although I only recorded information
about 100 of the discs, I went through the discs one by one to generate
a count, find the various brands, and quickly analyze condition.

RESULTS

The disc
collection is in remarkably good condition considering its age and disc
types. Very few scratches were noted, and most discs seemed capable of
playback given proper needles and turntables. Patterns of degradation
do exist, however:

Exterior
disc coating flaking off
On the black coated Duodisc (top left), the flaking side of the
disc was an unrecorded blank (the other side had been used to record
a broadcast and was in good condition. Bits of the black plastic
coating were cracked and falling off with ease. This was the worst
instance of damage documented. It was fascinating to think that
the process of recording -- etching grooves into the plastic, might
further bind the exterior layer to the aluminum base coat.
The orange Recoton disc (below, left) featured flaking around the
perimeter of the disc. Several orange coated discs displayed this
type of damage.

Cracks
-- a preamble to flaking
Cracking of the exterior plastic coating was evident on many of
the discs -- orange, red, and black, and most brands.

Bind
separation - or rust?
This orange coated Duodisc is the only example of this sort of
dicoloration, which is likely to be either the chemical degradation
of the binder between the orange plastic coating and the aluminum
base or the rusting of the aluminum base.

Plasticizer seeping?
A key characteristic of cellulose nitrate discs is the separtion
of the castor oil which is used to plasticize nitrocellulose during
the manufacture of the discs. This separation is manifested by the
expulsion of the castor oil from the celluloe nitrate and the formation
of a sticky, powder-like layer on the surface of discs. This sort
of degradation only discovered on one disc.

Plasticizer seeping, part II?
Raised bumps were noticed on several of the red coated / blue
label Wilcox Gay Recordio Discs, accompanied by a thin layer of
some sort of emulsion-like residue. The bumps were heaviest towards
the center of the recordable area of the discs.

I was not able to properly document the damage seemingly
caused by light or air particulates on the discs. Many of the black coated
discs displayed at their perimeter -- and particularly the edge facing
the open sleeve of the disc envelope) a green-ish translucency (Duodisc)
or a red-ish translucency (Wilcox Gay Recordio Discs). Also, while it
not apparent that each disc had suffered damage from the highly acidic
paper envelopes in which the discs are stored, it is of no doubt that
the low pH provides a hostile, acidic environment which can only encourage
further deterioration.

FUTURE
PLANS
First I would
like to identify the composition of the plastic (information containing)
coating on the discs. Further, I would like to establish the composition
of the red and orange discs versus the black discs and also explore the
compenents of each brand's discs. Following the initiate of the patent
survey, I would like to find patents relevant to the brands of discs in
this collection. Such information may provide clues as to binder composition
(what adheres the plastic coating to the aluminum base) as well as the
chemical make up of fillers, extenders, and other additives. I would also
like to measure the exact dimensions of thickness of the discs and compare
the various types and brands.
I would like
to share a completed survey with the Bing
Crosby Internet Museum so that the contents of radio broadcasts could
be verified (guests documented properly on the discs) and so that if at
a later date this collection was given proper preservation attention and
user as well as archival copies were made, a means to advertise the resource
would be available. I would also like to research the existance and state
of any Crosby broadcast discs formally housed in the archives of NBC,
CBS, and ABC. I would also like to share the results of the survey with
the Phonozoic's
Recordio Project site which strives to document the different types
and time periods of home recording discs. |
