TREATMENT PROPOSAL

Treatment Objective
To improve the physical and chemical stability as well as to provide ease of access and a new housing for the fragile and brittle broadside.

Description
The poster is silkscreen printed in three colors, advertising the performance of Junior Wells at the Matrix. It is created by Moscoso in the style of Fillmore era posters.

Media
Silkscreen printing ink
Blue, green and orange (applied in that order) silkscreen printing ink coveres nearly the entirety of the recto, with only a small text shading on the bottom text detailing the concert dates and location that reveal the un-inked sheet. The ink is applied evenly and in some areas of the design is applied to mimic the look of lithography.
Graphite:
An annotation noting the poster’s dimensions is located on the bottom left corner of the verso.
Primary Support
The poster is printed on 80 lb cardstock and is 0.0105 inches thick (X cm). The paper is machine made, smooth, and off white in color.Housing
The poster is housed in a 20 point lig-free folder with a similar poster from the same collection

Condition
The poster is, overall, in good condition. Tape at the corners of the recto, small pinholes from staples or tacks, and discoloration and tidelines on the verso of the print compromise the print’s stability but otherwise the poster is intact.

Media
Silkscreen printing ink
The silkscreen printing ink appears to be in good condition without signs of fading, abrasion, or discoloration. Small areas of ink loss around the perimeter, especially the right side of the recto, are apparent. A small spot on the face and hand of the man in the design appear to be un-inked areas where the silkscreen ink was not distributed.
Graphite
The graphite annotation is in good condition.

Primary Support
The poster was displayed using both tape on the recto and staples or tacks, evidence of which remains at the corners of the print.
Medium brown stains are apparent at the bottom right corner of the recto, and there is surface grime overall. On the verso, brown discoloration is overall, with tidelines on the left and bottom, and right.
There are creases, both horizontal and verticle at the center of the poster extending to the top and bottom, Small surface abrasions (exaggerated under UV light) at the top left and mid left side of the verso are visible.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL
1. Test for media solubility (15 minutes)
2. Clean as media allows – dry clean surface with vinyl eraser crumbs; wash and remove adhesive tape. Flatten. (2 hours)
3. House in 20 point lig-free folder
Total treatment time: 2:15

TREATMENT PROCEDURE
1.Test silkscreen printing ink for solubility using water, ethanol. acetone, and naptha. Check verso for tidelines. (20 minutes)
2. Surface clean with vinyl erasers. (10 minutes)
3. Removed tape by mechanical means, then by thermal, and finally with the assistance of solvents (Naptha under the fume hood). (1 hour)
4. Blotter washed. (30 minutes)
5. Dried between blotters and boards for 72 hours.
6. Inpainted sites where adhesive tape removed silkscreen pigment with watercolor mixed with methyl cellulose. (45 minutes)
7. Rehoused in acid-free folder
Total treatment time: 2:45
