1. Applied Klucel G (w/ SC6000) overall to consolidate – did not noticeably darken leather
2. Supported head and tail endband by applying Japanese paper and paste from spine to core
3. To solve the preferential open’s stress on the spine:
- Lifted spine from front cover to back, leaving spine leather attached at back cover joint.
- Lifted leather along the front board and back board at spine to accommodate rebacking material
- Cleaned spine with methyl cellulose
- Applied new spine linings – one Japanese paper lining, overhanging at front to reaffirm textblock to front board attachment, and one one-on Japanese paper hollow tube.
- Sized heavy kozo with methyl cellulose; toned to match leather
- Rebacked with toned kozo
4. Replaced leather over new rebacking material with Lascaux 498
5. Created drop spine housing
