We have compiled the following list of online resources in the hope that
it might be of use to iSchool writers. Although the list is by no means
comprehensive, it highlights some UT resources and some non-UT links that
are among our favorites.
Have you found an online source that was helpful to you? Please contact
us to recommend links to add to this list.
-
IE (Intellectual Entrepreneurship)
IE is one of the founders of the Graduate Writing Project. IE offers
several for-credit courses,
including Academic and Professional Writing (GRS 390W) and The Culture
of Academic Writing (GRS 389W).
- The Undergraduate
Writing Center (UWC)
Although graduate students are not eligible to meet with consultants
at the Undergraduate Writing Center, everyone is welcome to use the
Writers' Advice Line (475-VERB) during business hours (Mon-Th 9:00
a.m.-9:00 p.m., Fri 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.). The line is intended for
quick questions only. Please remember that you can always
contact the iSchool GWP to make appointments for personalized,
confidential, in-depth assistance.
The UWC staff has compiled an extensive list of online
resources for writers. The UWC also offers handouts
on their Web site that are extremely "handy" to writers at all levels.
The following are among our favorites:
(You must have Adobe
Acrobat Reader to open the following UWC handouts)
-
Academic Integrity at The University of Texas at Austin
This site is incredibly important for all UT students to be familiar
with. It provides UT Austin's definition of plagiarism, examples of
the proper way to paraphrase, and more.
-
UT System Crash Course in Copyright
Another extremely important resource. The site includes a section
on
fair use as well as a wealth of other information about copyright.
-
UT Austin Research Web
This is the official place to find information if you are conducting
research. If you are working on any sort of research project involving
people, the
Human Subjects portion of the site will provide you with necessary
policies, procedures, and application materials to seek IRB approval
of your research.
- APA
Style Electronic References
The APA Style site is very helpful for finding the latest APA guidelines
for citing online sources.
- Bartleby.com
Bartleby is a lot of fun (although we warn you there are many pop-up
ads). Bartleby includes full text versions of works in the public
domain, including several reference works. The following examples
are especially useful for writers:
- Purdue University
Online Writing Lab The Purdue OWL is among the oldest and most
reputable around. We recommend that you take a look at their resources,
including their handouts.
