Physically Present, Mentally Absent? Technology Multitasking in Organizational Meetings.

This research examines mixed reality meetings, a context where individuals attend to both face-to-face group members while multitasking with technology. In these meetings, members engage simultaneously with those physically present and those outside of the meeting (virtual communication partners). Technology multitasking in meetings has a dual effect: it not only impacts the individual user, it has the potential to transform how collocated groups communicate and work together since attention becomes fragmented across multiple competing tasks.

Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to investigate mixed reality meetings across four themes: (1) the factors contributing to the likelihood to multitask based on meeting type, polychronicity (one’s preference for multitasking), and cohesion beliefs, (2) behavior during mixed reality assessed by copresence management, (3) attitudes toward technology multitasking, and (4) subjective outcomes measured by perceived productivity and meeting satisfaction. The qualitative data set consists of fieldwork from a global software company and interviews with 8 information workers.

The quantitative data are comprised of survey results from the fieldwork site (n=156) and an online panel of information workers (n=110).

Results indicate that information workers perceive distinct meeting types that are associated with implicit norms for appropriate technology multitasking. These norms varied based on the relevance of a meeting segment and if a power figure was present. A higher preference score for multitasking (high polychronicity) was significantly correlated with increased technology multitasking and perceived productivity. Members of cohesive teams exhibited the most technology multitasking and perceived their teammates multitasking as appropriate. However, outsiders who exhibited the same behaviors were viewed as rude and distracting. Overall, information workers who multitasked during meetings did so with electronic communication tasks (e-mail and instant messaging) as opposed to other computing tasks (e.g. writing documents, researching information).

These findings are discussed in relation to psychological studies on multitasking, computer-supported cooperative work, and social constructionist views of technology use. This dissertation is a contribution to the assessment of technology use in social settings, particularly in organizations where tasks are often interrupted and a reliance on electronic communication tools impacts how people manage and accomplish work.

Information Triage: Dual-Process Theory in Credibility Judgments of Web-Based Resources.

This dissertation describes the credibility judgment process using social psychological theories of dual-processing, which state that information processing outcomes are the result of an interaction “between a fast, associative information- processing mode based on low-effort heuristics, and a slow, rule-based information processing mode based on high-effort systematic reasoning” (Chaiken & Trope, 1999, p. ix). Further, this interaction is illustrated by describing credibility judgments as a choice between examining easily identified peripheral cues (the messenger) and content (the message), leading to different evaluations in different settings.

The focus here is on the domain of the Web, where ambiguous authorship, peer- produced content, and the lack of gatekeepers create an environment where credibility judgments are a necessary routine in triaging information. It reviews the relevant literature on existing credibility frameworks and the component factors that affect credibility judgments. The online encyclopedia (instantiated as Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica) is then proposed as a canonical form to examine the credibility judgment process.

The two main claims advanced here are (1) that information sources are composed of both message (the content) and messenger (the way the message is delivered), and that the messenger impacts perceived credibility; and (2) that perceived credibility is tempered by information need (individual engagement). These claims were framed by the models proposed by Wathen & Burkell (2002) and Chaiken (1980) to forward a composite dual process theory of credibility judgments, which was tested by two experimental studies. The independent variables of interest were: media format (print or electronic); reputation of source (Wikipedia or Britannica); and the participant’s individual involvement in the research task (high or low).

The results of these studies encourage a more nuanced understanding of the credibility judgment process by framing it as a dual-process model, and showing that certain mediating variables can affect the relative use of low-effort evaluation and high- effort reasoning when forming a perception of credibility. Finally, the results support the importance of messenger effects on perceived credibility, implying that credibility judgments, especially in the online environment, and especially in cases of low individual engagement, are based on peripheral cues rather than an informed evaluation of content.

Themes in Videogame Research: A Content Analysis of Scholarly Articles.

In trying to preserve and provide access to video game materials for scholars, archives will need to build standards for collecting and structuring their collections. Archivists must assess the information needs of their users to begin building collections. In order to begin the assessment, this paper presents a content analysis of scholarly video game articles. The results of the analysis will provide the basis for structuring video game archives. Metadata schemas are important for archival institutions, in order that scholars and patrons can better understand the materials that the archive holds. That our metadata will aid patrons is widely accepted, but too often our schemas are based on archivists’ rather than patrons’ ideas of what is important. The content analysis presented in this paper combines historical ideas of metadata standards from expert archivists with an analysis of what themes are important, common, and sought-for in the literature spanning the last three decades. In order to analyze the articles selected, I use a content analysis based on Krippendorff. From the results, I develop a list of metadata elements and a structure for types of materials to save and structure.

One Butterfly: Understanding Interface and Interaction Design for Multitouch Environments in Museum Contexts.

Museums can be perceived as stuffy and forbidding; Web technologies enable museum staff to expand access to their collections and perhaps counterbalance these somewhat unfair perceptions. Museums are also looking for new ways to communicate with the public in part to make a case for their relevance in a digital information age. With the emergence of multitouch computing and popularization of user experience design museum professionals will soon be wondering how to marry users' information seeking experiences occurring on multiple computing platforms. As a means of addressing those issues this Master’s Report summarizes the One Butterfly design project. That project's goal was to create a multitouch interface for federated search of Smithsonian collections. The report describes the project’s three major phases. First, an idea for an interface was developed and then designs based on that idea were captured and clarified. Second, a formal review of related research was taken on to ground these designs in a tradition of museum informatics, as well as interface and interaction design literatures; Third, a evaluation was conducted of the design and the underlying idea in light of things learned in the previous phase. A discussion on future projects related to One Butterfly concludes this report.

Scholarly Information Sharing among Book and Paper Conservators.

Book and paper conservation integrates several disciples, including traditional handcrafts, hard sciences, and art and book history, each with distinct methodologies and epistemic cultures. In order to examine how book and paper conservators straddle these varied fields and their methods, a large scale survey was conducted to investigate the sharing of information within the field. This examination of both formal publication and informal, lateral communication was inspired by the work of sociologists of science such as de Solla Price and Diane Crane and their concept of invisible colleges. A sample of one hundred book and paper conservators was questioned on methods of information sharing and attitudes towards publication and topics such as peer review. The result shows a field with great respect for formal methods of publication but still largely centered around informal, lateral methods of information sharing. Based on the survey results, potential methods of information sharing that may be well suited to the singularities of the field are discussed.

Providing Access to an Appalachian Folk Song Collection.

As archival material is digitized at an increasing rate, archivists are beginning to utilize Web-2.0 applications to create widely accessible, interactive Web exhibits for collections. Interactive features may be exploited to convey the collective, populist cultural traditions that give context to many cultural artifacts. For this project, I first researched current options and best practices for use of open source content management systems and interactive capabilities in Web exhibits of archival material. Then I designed a site providing Web access to a collection of North Carolina folk songs recorded in 1935 by Appalachian musician and insider ethnomusicologist Bascom Lamar Lunsford. In the Appalachian folk music tradition, versions of songs may evolve to overtake the canonical, collaboration among musicians is widespread, and expert opinion is held no higher than that of the Everyman. These 315 songs were gathered over decades of interaction and collaboration with other musicians. Accordingly, through use of various avenues for user contribution and participation, the site is designed to encourage a view of the songs as elements of a living and still-evolving tradition, and to facilitate the creation of a community of expertise and ownership that befits the collaborative and populist values of the Appalachian tradition.

The SCAD Video Project: Exploring Social Conflict in Africa.

The Strauss Center for International Security and Law has created a new website and visualization tool that permits researcher to display and understand violent social events on the African continent. This massive database of non-military events such as riots, demonstration and uprisings was created in collaboration with the University of North Texas and researchers at the LBJ School of Public Policy. My role in this capstone was to create a small collection of videos to document how the visualization was developed, to demonstrate how to use the tool, and to illustrate how the database can be used by researchers and policy makers interested in the causes of social unrest. This project involved interviewing the developers and researchers who built the database and its visualization component. These video interviews were conducted in Austin and Denton and edited together with screen captures of the tool in use as well as live archival and news footage. The live footage was obtained from sources such as Al- Jazeera creative commons, Associated Press and the UNT researcher’s own video collections. The videos were produced to coincide with the launch of the site in February as well as the debut of the visualization component in May.

Screaming Taglines, Provocative Titles, and Alluring Design: Providing Access to the Interstate Poster Collection.

The Interstate Poster Collection resides within the Film Collection at the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The collection consists of over 3,000 posters, and many have been digitized. The institution stores the images and poster metadata in a database for in-house use. For my project, I developed a database and web application that links specific film and poster metadata to the digital images of individual posters, so users can visually browse and search the collection. The application is an interactive user experience that provides multiple access points to the collection. The project was completed in four stages. First, using an existing wireframe and available information for each poster in the Harry Ransom Center’s database as well as external sources, I mapped the significant data into a entity-relationship diagram. Second, I developed a relational database with a table structure that integrates individual posters, their images, and descriptive metadata. Third, I cataloged a small sample of the collection and populated the database. Fourth, I used MySQL and PHP to create a web application that allows users to visually browse and search the collection.

Enhancing the UT VRC Resources webpage.

The Visual Resources Collection (VRC) at UT Austin was originally founded in 1940 and migrated to the UT Fine Arts Library in November 2009. Institutions established VRCs to support faculty needs for images to be used in lectures and research and historically they consisted primarily of slides. However, digital images are now the more commonly used format. The UT Art & Art History VRC has over 500,000 slides and more than 47,000 digital images which can be accessed through UT’s Digital Archive Services (DASe) database. In addition to the UT VRC, ArtStor, and Google Images, there are many other sources of images available online. My Capstone project is to enhance the VRC Resources webpage by creating an annotated pathfinder to assist faculty in searching for, citing, and scanning images. An environmental scan of other VRCs was the starting point for my project. After compiling a list of resources, I explored different methods of organizing and presenting the information which included creating tag clouds from College of Fine Arts faculty areas of interest and course offerings and conducting card sorting exercises with the selected resources. The resulting webpage is designed to be an information-rich and timesaving resource for the user.

RNA2DMap: Interactive Visualizations in Bioinformatics.

Bioinformatics involves the application of information technology and data-rich computational methods to support scientific investigation of complex biological problems. This information-intensive approach to biological research produces large quantities of data thereby creating a need for visualization tools to facilitate data analysis. For my capstone, I worked with the Gutell Lab in the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at UT to create RNA2DMap, a web-based visualization application that assists scientists in exploring research data on the structure of RNA molecules. The main feature of RNA2DMap is an interactive 2-dimensional representation of an RNA molecule that serves as an interface to experimental and computational research data on RNA. The development of RNA2DMap involves technical implementation challenges as well as challenges in designing for demanding cognitive activities. As a result, user-centered design approaches such as stakeholder interviews, ongoing heuristic evaluations, iterative design, and usability testing has been instrumental in the development process of RNA2DMap. The outcome of this project will hopefully be an engaging tool that helps the research community produce insight into complex, multidimensional scientific data on RNA.

A Survey and Plan for Digitizing Audiovisual Holdings.

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History’s collections are rich with reel to reel audio tapes, cassettes, 16mm film and even Beta-max video tapes. Many of the formats held at this institution are outdated and deteriorating and most are inaccessible to the public. It is imperative to the access and preservation of these audiovisual items that they be transferred to digital format. My project included two parts; the first was a comprehensive survey of the entire audiovisual holdings, the second was a preliminary draft of a plan to digitize these holdings. My survey was conducted by performing keyword searches on the entire database of accession records. I examined finding aids as well as actual boxes of materials for additional information. The results of my work this semester are a spreadsheet of all audiovisual holdings (including the collection name, type of material, location, and age) and a written plan to digitize these holdings modeled to fit into a variety of different grant applications. The goal is for the Center to use this information to attain a grant to purchase digitization equipment, supplies and staff in order to provide access to this wonderful assortment of audio and video.

Evaluation of Education Serials at the Perry-Castaneda Library.

The principal objective of this project was to gain knowledge and understanding of collection development policies at an academic library. This was achieved through the analysis and evaluation of the University of Texas at Austin Libraries’ education serials collection, maintained by Janelle Hedstrom, the education bibliographer at the Perry-Castaneda Library. General information—including price, publisher, peer-reviewed status, specific funding codes used to purchase the serial, and indexing and full-text availability in aggregators such as EBSCO—was collected using Ulrich’s Periodical Directory for each of the approximately 400 serials. An evaluation rubric was then developed in collaboration with Ms. Hedstrom and applied to the serials. The rubric took into account several aspects: availability (both in print and online), quality and reputation in the field, pricing, and the topics of focus at UT’s College of Education. This resulted in recommendations on which titles to cancel, which titles to transform, and which titles to maintain. The serials were also collocated into 3 categories: those with a high cancellation priority; a medium priority; and a low priority. These categories are intended for Ms. Hedstrom’s use as the UT Libraries are facing budget uncertainty; they serve to reflect a small, medium, and large budget cut.

Implementing OAI-PMH for The Open Video Digital Library Toolkit Project.

The Open Video Digital Library Toolkit (OVDLT) project, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Service, is a joint project led by Gary Geisler (University of Texas School of Information), and Karan Sheldon (Northeast Historic Film). The OVDLT project is downloadable, open source software tool for organizations to build Web-based digital video libraries from their moving image collections. This Capstone project implements the OAI- PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) data exchange standard to allow installations of the Open Video Digital Library Toolkit to easily share their objects’ metadata. The product is a fully-operational, fully-compliant, server-ready implementation of the OAI-PMH. The OAI-PMH handler is integrated with OVDLT’s Ruby source code, and responds to OAI-PMH verb requests with appropriate queries to the toolkit’s MySQL backend. The result is that an institution’s relevant Dublin Core metadata - along with information about its particular implementation of OVDLT - is exposed as valid, well-formed XML for client applications to harvest.

Mobile eMicrobes: Developing an iPhone Strategy for a Digital Library.

With the growing number of emerging infectious diseases and global threats such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and bio-terrorism, a firm understanding of microbiology and infectious disease is critical for all healthcare professionals. The eMicrobes project addresses the difficulties in instructing health care professionals in infectious diseases and microbiology through a digital library designed for use by practicing health-care professionals and trainees. This poster presents a strategy for creating a mobile version of the eMicrobes digital library. The iPhone family of devices was selected as the development platform because of its dominance in mobile Web traffic. Web-based versus native applications were considered, and a web-based application strategy was selected for wider accessibility. Competing mobile medical applications were examined for features and availability. Data storage issues, such as eMicrobe's requirement for offline access, were addressed. User research and best mobile interface practices were consulted to create interface prototypes, which were then refined through usability testing. As the eMicrobes project enters its final year of development, these strategies and prototypes will serve to further the project's mobile development requirements.

The Tarlton Law Library’s Special Collections & CollectiveAccess.

The Tarlton Law Library has expressed interest in using the online collections management application CollectiveAccess. Tarlton is looking for a tool that will aid them in creating online access to their special collections. The goal of my Capstone is to deliver a document and a small, sample online collection. The test collection created may consist of text, audio files, video files, rare books, and art objects. The project will also have a paper component documenting the experience, my process, metadata choices, and installation of the software. It is my intention with this project to deliver Tarlton an example of how CollectiveAccess can manage their online collections. This capstone will hopefully help Tarlton determine whether or not CollectiveAccess will be the right tool for their goals. This project also equips me with a greater understanding of CollectiveAccess and its abilities.

Unifying the Digital Collection Databases at LBJ Library and Museum.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum website makes available a handful of distinct digital collections: a photo archive, LBJ’s Daily Diary, oral history transcripts, and telephone conversation summaries. Each of these collections were originally digitized and stored for the use of archivists, not the public. They each contain very different digital objects, with descriptions derived from the original records, and just as variant as those records. For instance, a photo may be of “President Johnson,” while the speaker in a telephone conversation may be “LBJ”. This presents a challenge for anyone searching these collections to be sure that they are finding all records of interest to them. My challenge was to create a unifying thesaurus, an “equivalency map,” for these collections. In the next few years, the Library will implement a site search, using one search box for the entire site and its collections. This new thesaurus will ensure that such distinct collections, with the accompanying idiosyncrasies of description, will return consistent and useful results for users. As a proof-of- concept exercise, a user study was implemented at the final stage of this project. By comparing user search results from the collections in their current state to results based on implementation of the thesaurus, a case can be made for the importance of such activities in returning more useful results.

Locating & Digitizing Photographs of UT’s Law Buildings.

The head of Special Collections at Tarlton Law Library had a frequent request from library patrons: they wanted to see historical pictures of UT’s law buildings. The request was frequent enough to warrant the digitization of these historic photos. I was asked to sort through the library’s holdings to select the most representative samples of each era, digitize those representative samples, and locate photographs at other institutions for future digitization, or patron referral. The entire process involved acquainting myself with the history of UT’s law buildings, calibrating the library’s digitization workstation, researching current digitization standards, working with field supervisors to create the best (and affordable) digital images, creating a digitization workflow, digitizing the photographs with the established workflow, and gathering information on law building photographs located at the Briscoe Center for American History. With this initial work done, Tarlton Law Library will create an online resource that will provide better access to law building photographs. Should patrons need more images, they can easily be referred to the Briscoe Center. Additionally, the monitor calibration and workflow creation will allow future digitization projects to more closely follow NARA’s best practices.

Investigation Into Indexed Television Series Representation And Visualization.

Previous research into human indexing with the Glifos environment here at the iSchool has produced a handful of films broken down into constitutive parts on the basis of film grammar - music, sounds, motifs, sequences, scenes, shots, shot types, characters, scene types, and locations. The objective of this project is to gain insight into the similarities and differences of indexing and representing a television series based on previous experience indexing feature length films. Using Twin Peaks as my corpus, the pilot and first seven episodes (i.e. the first season) were indexed based on the units of analysis agreed upon for feature length films. Prototypes for a future user interface were then developed to show the possibilities afforded by structured data, with the assumption that new forms of representation and visualization will enable the student or scholar to engage with moving image material at a more granular level and heighten interpretive capability.

Enhancing Languages of the Stage: Instruction and Innovation.

Consider a first-year UT student enrolled in the Theatre Department’s Languages of the Stage (“LOS”) course. While their levels of passion and creativity may run high, their research skills may need some refinement. LOS is offered to undergraduate theatre and dance majors in an effort to provide students with the “analytical and research skills” necessary for both practitioners and scholars of the fine arts. The course is often a student’s first introduction to college-level research, and provides an opportunity for problem-based library instruction sessions given by the Theatre/Dance Librarian, Beth Kerr. The goal of this project was to collaborate with librarians and faculty members to create online materials that supplement and enhance the library instruction sessions offered to students enrolled in the course. The end-products of this semester-long effort include a wiki focused on providing students with a one-stop-shop for their course research needs, as well as the incorporation of interactive, online tutorials to address information literacy objectives. The online tools created for this project can be utilized to enhance face-to-face library instructions sessions, posted to course management systems such as Blackboard, as well as included in the course syllabi and on the Fine Arts Library’s website.

Human Rights in Texas: Promoting Public Awareness through Glifos Social Media and the Digital Videos of the Texas After Violence Project.

The Texas After Violence Project is an Austin based non-profit whose goals are to create and make accessible interviews with people who face situations of violence and results of the penal system of Texas. In 2008, the University of Texas Libraries formed the Human Rights Documentation Initiative in order to preserve and provide access to human rights documentation from around the world. For my capstone, I will use the Glifos Social Media software to promote dialog on effective ways to respond to and prevent violence. I will work as project coordinator for T-Kay Sangwand, the Human Rights Archivist at the University of Texas Libraries and the director of the TAVP, Dr. Virginia Raymond, to obtain 19 videos from the TAVP and facilitate a process by which staff at the organization can index and make accessible over 26 hours of interviews and information about violence in Texas. I will also train the staff at the TAVP in the use of Glifos Social Media and create training materials for the software’s future use at the TAVP and the HRDI.

Archaeological Digital Object Management.

The project I am working on concerns the Creation of an Evolving Archive for data storage of the Institute of Classical Archaeology to be housed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. The ICA has been engaged in archaeological practice since the 1970 and has a large volume of traditional paper and film records as well as an emerging body of Digital records. This project will focus on the creation of a Repository for this data to be located at the TACC. This project will focus on the creation of an ingest work flow so that new material can be added as well as an access mechanism so that the information stored at the TACC will be accessible to researchers. A simple metadata schema be employed that will automatically harvest element information from the files with minimal need for human interaction. The result will be a deep searchable file structure that can capture the nuance and idiosyncrasy of archaeological knowledge production and still provide findable resources for comparison and research.

Evaluating Open Source Exhibit Creation Software: Curating a Web Exhibit Using Pachyderm and Omeka.

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History places priority on creating new web content in order to more readily share the Center’s resources with the public. An integral part of achieving this aim is creating web-based exhibits, but the best way to accomplish the creation of such exhibits is still under review. The purpose of my project is to aid the Briscoe Center in the search for an effective and efficient way to produce web exhibits by evaluating two different open source exhibit creation software packages, Pachyderm and Omeka. The first stage of the project involved selecting a collection and choosing items from that collection for inclusion in the web exhibit. Once chosen, the items were digitized, and the resulting digital images were edited and adjusted in accordance with the standards set forth by the Briscoe Center. The second stage of the project encompassed creation of the web exhibits themselves. This involved developing a structure for the exhibit, performing research to generate text to accompany the artifacts in the exhibit, and building the exhibit using the open source software. Once completed, the exhibits will be uploaded to the Briscoe Center’s site for inclusion in the existing repertoire of web exhibits.

Knowledge Management Shared Network: Digital Information Guide Design.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to create internal knowledge management system called Digital Information Guide (DIG), for their research domain knowledge and administration information. The objective of the capstone project is to design the species/ biology section of the DIG, which is the main content of the office’s research domain knowledge. In consideration of the office’s maintaining work in the future, the DIG is built so that it can be modified by Adobe Dreamweaver software. This project will build on the old version wireframe with some necessary modifications. The goal of species/ biology pages is to collect and organize the existing data for six spotlight species. The DIG provides search interfaces from two aspects: species biological catalogs (Search by Name) and Texas counties (Search by Map). Due to the requirement of Dreamweaver software and the limit of budget, the search function is provides through static web pages without a database installation. To ensure the web pages’ usability, a usability test was applied to the DIG. Several biologists were chosen from the Austin Texas Ecological Services Office and participated in the usability test. The final version of the DIG takes the result of usability test into account.
