Santa Clara Day School

The tribe that Santa Clara Day School serves is one of the northern Pueblo tribes. The school is located on Santa Clara Pueblo thirty miles north of Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, and ninety miles from Albuquerque, the only metropolitan city in the state.

Santa Clara Day School is a Bureau of Indian Affairs funded elementary school serving the community of Santa Clara Pueblo. The original school facility was constructed in 1926. Seventy years later, after many years of planning and waiting, the school underwent major renovation and new construction. There are now new classrooms, a new library, computer labs, a science lab, and a gymnasium. The community also helped plan for and build a wonderful new playground, baseball field, and a schoolyard habitat and community garden.

The library is recognized for its student library assistant program.  Assistants from grades 4, 5, 6 come to the library with classes to provide assistance in locating materials and in circulation assistance.
The library also hosts a literacy night once a month. About 30-40 parents and children show up to participate in activities and select a book to take home. One recent literacy night focused on cooking and the free books were Native cookbooks.

Students are also involved in a Battle of the Books competition with other northern Pueblo schools. Forty students enrolled in Battle of the Books in fall 2007, and 15 students made it through the first elimination round.
Santa Clara Day School offers Tewa language classes for students featuring tribal members who come to the school to teach bilingual classes.

The librarian's dream is to have more shelving for the library!
