Rock Point Community School

Rock Point Community School is located in Rock Point, Arizona and serves approximately 410 students in grades K-12. The mission of the school is to be “committed to help our students achieve to their fullest potentials: academically, socially, and physically to become responsible, self-directing, self-supporting and contributing members of the community and the society at large.”

The elementary has Library Nights every Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, where parents may come in with their children to do either Accelerated Reading (AR) reading & quizzes, or have access to the Internet. They have the Accelerated Reading Program for both Libraries. Incentives are given at both Elementary and Secondary libraries for the students that are participating in this program.

The secondary Navajo classes are helping the library read books in Navajo to any class. The classes have to sign up for these readings in Navajo by students. The secondary library also hosts a Navajo book fair from Salina Bookshelf. Salina Bookshelf is based in Flagstaff, Arizona, and they sell books written in Navajo.  When they invite authors of these books, they will also read their books in Navajo.

At the secondary library also is the Diné word of the day, which is announced every morning during homeroom. Diné word of the day are words from the Navajo Spelling Bee (April 2008) List, where the secondary librarian seeks the definitions for these words. Sometimes community members provide their definitions since the words are considered ‘ancient’ and are not commonly used these days.

They have also scheduled a Navajo Storyteller, Sunny Dooley, who told winter stories on November 14, 2007. The secondary librarian, also helps with the Navajo Spelling Bee & Navajo Culture Bowl both of which happen in April of each year.
