Ojo Encino Day SchoolOjo Encino Day School serves Navajo children. The school is a BIA school located 25 miles west of Cuba, New Mexico on the Navajo reservation. In addition to providing services for its 220 students in grades K-8, the school library also serves the Ojo Encino Head Start students (3 & 4 year olds) and the BabyFace program (6 months – 3 year olds).Ojo Encino participates in the Accelerated Reading (AR) Program to help promote independent, leisure reading among students. The students select books to read from the extensive AR reading list. After completing a book, a student will take a quiz on the computer to assess his or her comprehension. Students earn points from passing these quizzes and in some schools, can cash in points for small prizes. Certificates are awarded for passing from one reading level to the next. The school also promotes family literacy by hosting reading activities, such as parents nights and reading bingo, that involve both students and parents. A donation of $50 will sponsor a month of family literacy activities! If you are interested in donating, please send an email to loriene@ischool.utexas.edu or ifican@ischool.utexas.edu. |
