Back to the Honoring Authors main page Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow (1913 - )Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow was born on the Crow Indian reservation on October 27, 1913 near Lodge Grass, Montana. One of his grandfathers was a scout for General Armstrong Custer and another grandfather was the legendary tribal chief, Medicine Crow. He attended the University of Southern California, and earned his master’s degree in 1939 with a thesis titled “The Effects of European Culture Contact upon the Economic, Social, and Religious Life of the Crow Indians.” In 1948, he was appointed the tribal historian and anthropologist of the Crow Indian tribe. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of California in 2003 at the age of 90 years old. He recently won the 2008 American Indian Youth Literature Award for his book Counting Coup: Becoming a Crow Chief on the Reservation and Beyond. Sources: “Joe Medicine Crow.” PBS: The War.
