Back to the Honoring Authors main page Cynthia Leitich SmithCynthia Leitich Smith was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in several states before settling in Austin, Texas with husband, award-winning children’s author, Greg Leitich Smith. She is a tribal member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Cynthia has written three books for children, Jingle Dancer, Rain is Not My Indian Name, and Indian Shoes, and several short stories for middle grade readers. Her works are usually set in a mid-to-southwestern United States setting and have earned her numerous literally awards including being named the 2001 Writer of the Year from Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. Her achievements prompted the Library Media Connection to include her among its list of “100 History-Making Ethnic Women.” In addition to her work as a writer, she is often the featured author and/or speaker at festivals, conferences, libraries, and other educational institutions. This summer she will be a visiting faculty member at the Union Institute & University/Vermont College MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program.
