SFMOMA
The Haley-Goldmans weigh-in on the influence and import of the Best of the Web awards. Unfortunately, the Best of the Web awards does not yet have a category for UCD. In developing their paper the authors interviewed a who’s-who of museum web developers, whose names unfortunately weren’t released. I have decided to detail the decisions made by the SFMOMA design team and allow this to inform your browsing in the window below. In part two I've included a mixture of museum websites some were Best of the Web award winners from 2007 and others are museum websites that participated in some form of UCD reasearch.Mitroff describes how the findings of UCD research informed the design decisions for SFMOMA. Included two fo the five examples she gave in her paper.
The Relationship between User Centered Design and User Research
Collections vs. Exhibitions: Useres what to know what they can see when they come to the physical museum and are less concerned with whether the work/artifact is a exhibition or a permenant collection and most users doen't understand the difference anyway. The SFMOMA design team decided to combing exhibitions and collections into a new category they call "on view."
Breadth and Depth of On-line Content and Programs: Users weren't aware of what a museum web site, has to offer. The SFMOMA design team sought to find new ways of educating users about their programming by highlighting this information on their home page. They are considerign extending this into second level pages.
